Default JDM EG SiR refuses to start

I picked up one of these today (straight off the boat from japan) took it home on the back of a tow wagon as it had no battery. Fitted a brand new battery, went to start it and it just kept turning and made no attempt to start/fire up. I pulled out all the plugs and they look pretty ok and were all wet with gas (so not a fuel delivery problem) checked for spark in the leads and got none I then swapped in a distributor (complete) from a EG6 that starts fine, but it still wont start. Checked for spark again and there is spark but pretty weak. So i figure the leads are poor but it should at least make some attempt to fire up yet it just barrels and barrels and never shows any sign of firing. I'm going to put in new plugs and leads tommorow to see if it makes a difference but somehow i dont think it will. The only thing that i was wondering about is when i removed the distributor from the other engine, i had to turn the crank a little to get it to slot into the notch in the cam, and as it was getting dark it didnt go in first time so i took it out and turned it again till i got it aligned properly...could i have turned it the wrong way/too much or should that not make any difference seeing as the cams were never touched?(just found out it will only slot in one way and so thats why it didnt go in first time )

I need to check all the earths tommorow also but i'm running out of ideas.....As far as i'm concerned its getting fuel, air (it has a HKS suction filter and i can hear it sucking as i turn the ignition) and its getting some spark and even though its weakish should make some attempt to start. One last thing...due to myself and my friend turning and turning the engine and her getting gas, could the cylinders now be flooded...ie would we need to remove the plugs, turn it over a few times to get rid of gas laying in there?

You should go back and recheck all of your grounds from the engine to the battery, fuses, and sensors. Make sure ur battery is fully charged. It sounds like you have fuel, air, and spark. Just make sure the starter is cranking the motor over. If you try to start the motor and it back fires a lot that means your base timing is off. You then would have to go in and re-time the car. Aslo make sure you have the spark plug wires in the right firing order. If that doesnt work and everything seems to be fine, replace the ecu with one that you know that works.

I'm going to check all the grounds tommorow. The battery is brand new and fully charged. There is no back firing at all, the spark is not igniting the fuel, the motor just turns and turns without any sign of firing up. The spark plug wires have been checked and are all in the correct firing order. I can try the ECU from a UK EG6 VTi tommorow but somehow i dont think its the ECU thats at fault
