Default JDM D15B vtec lost to 00 SI

Hey guys I know this is the tech forum so help me out~! I raced a couple of my friends w/ 00SI, celica gts, and rsx type s. Well I won every race buy about a car length from launch untill the end of 2nd gear untill third and they were all gone. I noticed my car is a dog on the freeway or any other higher speeds(above 60mph). I was wondering what could be causing this lack of top end power?? My setup is a 90 hatch w/ JDM D15b 130hp, kamikaze headers, generic intake, catback exhaust, and fully advanced timing w/ no ping. Could it be that i'm pinging w/o knowing that I am?? Help~!
ps
in know way am I condoning or even supporting street racing(keep it on the track~!)

displacement is my guess, probably some better tuning would help too. and yes you should keep it off the streets

Thanx,
but I was wondering if advancing timing would effect the top end??

It could help a little but like the man said displacement. Get a B-series.

Reduce your timing, and see if that helps, duh.
Before you swap the motor, take it to somewhere
that can help you tune it, i.e. a dyno shop. Cheaper.

Why would you want to retard the timing on an NA motor when he is lookinf for power?

Anyway, the larger displacement motors are killing you because of one thing: torque.

Have you thought about putting hondata on your car? All the people i talk to including my mechanic (who btw is the best ever) says it's the way to go.

Because it might be detonating....duh.
A tenth of a liter isn't going to make or break the race...
especially if he said he's got them off the line.
Three tenths, now that's different, but he said 00Si.
Do a compression check, the motor may suck, or need
some lovin'...

hey I just did it compression test and it came out like this 205 210 208 203 and i'm running on heat range 4 spark plugs w/ .5 gap. Not quite sure of the spark specs for this motor so I used the ones for a 92-95 civic vx. By the way thanx for all the info and concern~!

I actually bought the header w/ a dyno printout(6hp to the wheels in topend) from the maker of kamikaze himself, right here in Chino...?!, but I also know you know what your talking about. Hmmm... I was wondering what your setup was mista bones? Help~!!

dude, welcome to the hell we call dealing with sohc trannies. WHat happens when you take a gsr, when preparing to boost it and swap its trans with an LS trans? it instantly becomes a dog NA, especially in the upper gears. Our situation is similar, 2nd gear is decent on all the boxes, some better than others, but 3rd on up is horrendous; you need to look into gear swapping amongst the various d series boxes to find a nice combo that compliments your motor setup/rev potential and upgrading to an SRR 4.7 or 4.9...the FD is the EQUALIZER...

I'm using an SI tranny and when I shift @ 7200 in second it starts @ 5000 in third. I thought that was short gearing?? I was thinking could using a pm7(88-89)ecu be the culprit also?

what transmission are you running?

fawka b-series, you should see what you can do with your SOHC engine, since it sounds like your having fun with it!

what engine was the dyno print out for? this maybee hurting you. it actually depends on how much power is coming out of the car. and i thought the kamikazes put out more power than that. like i said b4, you need a little more tuning. advanced timing caused my engine to lag and cut out early. it all depends on your set up. youre running the si tranny so it doesnt really look like that could be it. good luck

ok....but what is determing how fast you are going to go thru that 3rd gear is the final drive you are using...you weak points are 3 on up...raise the number on that final drive to a type r like 4.7+ and you will see! I am makinig power that some guys with NA dohc's envy, (especially my torque) and I still have problems with bone stock type-r's after 2nd gear- it just takes forever; these sohc trannies do wonderful with boost, but its an uphill battle NA.

hey guys,
thanx for all the info and insight that has been so generously offered by those who are experienced and those who just wanna help~! I think I might just change the front tire size to alter the final gear ratio(that's what I did on my h22 90 accord a couple of years ago) By the way my civic is much funner to drive than my h22 accord even though it's slower~! I noticed that driving a Honda is not about going fast(unless unlimited budget) but just enjoying the ohhh soo sweet sound of vtec and the ultimate build quality of Honda technicians that will continue to last with just a little TLC~! I think the verdict is clear that I need to fine tune my car and driving b4 any more information or assisstance can be taken and accounted for~! So thanx everyone

If its displacement you want, you wont find it in a Honda. More horsepower, yes.

Actually, displacement is working in the favor of the 1990 Civic with the D15B. Remember, it is not just raw displacment that counts. It is displacement vs weight. And even the heavy (for a 1988-1991) 1990 Civic with a 1.5 liter engine is MUCH less 'under-displaced' than a 2700 pound 2000 SI. Rather, I believe the problem is tuning. Now this guy did not say what ECU he is running. But in all likelihood, he is running a stock SI PM6 ECU. And as with the SOHC VTEC, it is a well known fact that VTEC engines don't like non-VTEC ECUs. The best solution to this problem is either a Zdyne one wire conversion or even a P28 ECU.

I got my d15 @ hookups in so cali for about 1000 w/ all paper work and conversion from dpfi 2 mpfi including si tranny~!

In response to the advice about the ecu I will definitely look into that, after looking at spontaneous a/d ratio readings. thanx for the info, by the way is it possible to run my pm7 ecu as good as a vtec ecu w/tuning?
