intermittent no start 01 CLS
This problem with our 01 CL-S just started last week.Sometimes won't start at all. other times starts with first turn of key. Cranks over at regular speed, fuel pump comes on, pressurizes and fuel gauge needle goes up. Key symbol blinks 5 times after turning it off. Battery is new, timing belt done 6 months ago. 1/2 tank gas.
Can't afford to just throw money at it, so turning to you guys fan any suggestions! Thanks in advance JoeC

Was not sure if that also meant when engine did not start.
Even though the pump is priming it may still be a problem with fuel pressure, poor connections in the PGM-FI Main Relay can result in low current to the fuel pump.
Have you used a fuel pressure gauge or are you assuming the fuel pressure is good, the gauge needle does not give that info.
Either get a FPG, [permanently mounted one] or try this, cycle the ign. a few times before cranking, turn on the ign. and wait till fuel pump stops priming, turn the ign. off and on again and wait again, do this at least 3-4 times then try and start the engine.
If this works the problem is most likely the contacts in the PGM-FI Main Relay, [not an uncommon problem].
Try the PGM-FI Main Relay "fix"...

I do not look for a bad solder joint, I just resolder all of them.
Also a $15 HEI spark tester would be handy to quickly test for spark when engine is not starting.
Both the FPG and the HEI spark tester are very handy tools to have for "future" troubleshooting. 94
