Integra having trouble starting...please help
a friend of mines has a 98 integra AT. after the car has rested more than 30 mins or so it would take a while to start. it sounds like its about to start but doesn't. the starter, battery and alternator was replaced within 6 months. its been going on for about a month. just replaced the fuel pump last week. a couple days ago i had the car and it wouldnt start on me, i sprayed brake cleaner into the intake and i think it help start it. can it be the injectors? please help, really want to get it done before the starter dies...(again, everything sounds like its turning and about to start)
thanks!
thanks!
Have you checked to see if it is a problem with fuel or a problem with spark.
I assume by your description the engine turns over, [starter works, engine cranks] but will not fire, [start] but sounds like it is about to start and it eventually does start, is that correct?
If so, when it does start, does it run OK?
When you turn on the ign. switch to run, [not start] can you hear the fuel pump prime the fuel system?
If so, how long does it prime for?
If you have not checked the spark, do so.
Pull a spark plug, [or use a spare one] plug it into the spark plug lead and ground the plug to the engine and have someone try and start the car and see if you have spark and how good the spark is, if there is no spark, intermittent/inconsistent spark or weak spark test the ign. coil and the ICM both can be effected by temperature, when checking the coil and ICM make sure the connections to them are tight.
For the fuel system the things that need to be checked are fuel pressure, power for the fuel injectors, [is there 12V+ at the injectors when ign. switch is in run] if you touch the injector with the tip of a screwdriver and put your ear to the other end you should hear a definite "click" each time it "fires", if not a consistent solid "clicking" on all 4 injectors check the PGM-FI Main Relay, [injector relay supplies the injectors with 12V+ an can also effected by temperature].
When was the last time fuel filter was changed?
A common cause of low fuel pressure is a clogged fuel filter.
If filter good but pressure low, again check the PGM-FI Main Relay, poor contacts on the fuel pump relay can cause low fuel pressure as will poor connections fo the relays to the board...

Do you have a multimeter, if not borrow or buy one, you can get one that will do the job for about $20. 94
