Default ignition timing questions

i know there's an effect if you retard or advance your ignition timing. i like to know if you can tell if the ignition is retard or advance just by the way the engine cranks up? like if your ignition is retard will be a typical cranking behaviour and vice versa with the ignition in advance. thanks

some ignitions systems have a start retard. Its easier to start a high compression engine if the ignition timing is retarded.

I don't know if you can tell right from when the motor starts up, but retarding will feel laggy when you rev it up on a normal motor and advance will feel more like it just wants to go.

I believe MSD makes one of these if someone needs one.

Thanks, J
