Default ignition timing ?

I jus got my car werking today and my friend did the timing fer me. He thought it was suppose to be at 12 degrees wen i jus found out its suppose to be at 16...so is my timing retarded or advanced right now. And also if i decide to time it myself how do i kno if its btdc?

you are retarded, well your ignition is retarded. and it should always be before top dead center. i dont think you would ever get spark after the piston was on its way back down.
