Ignition timing
Hey Guys,
I have a quick question. I have a 92 teg and I advanced my timing last summer and just guessed on how far to go. Then I retarded it for the winter. My question is before I do it again what is the right way to do it. I have a timing light but I do not how to use it on the teg. If it was my 71 javelin I would have no problem. Anyways what is the correct way to advance the timing? Do I even need a timing light??

Yes you need a timing light. Loosen the 3 distributor bolts then loosely tighten the top one. Short out the SCS service connector. Get the car idling normally(warmed up) then connect it to the #1 plug and the battery, aim it at the top of your crank pulley and pull the trigger. You'll be turning the distributor to move the red timing mark which is 16BTDC. A friend to help turn the distributor while you monitor the light is helpful, but it's not too bad going it alone. Just watch your fingers around the spinning pulleys & belts. Don't forget to re-torque the distributor bolts when you get it set where you want it.
Yes. It's under the dash on the passenger side on the G3 tegs. I'm not absolutely certain it's in the same place on your car. Run a search I'm sure this info must be kicking around here somewhere.
Why do you advance it in the summer and retard it in the winter BTW? If anything I'd think that was backwards since timing advance will increase your chance of detonation as will summer heat. I know it's not really hot in Indiana, I'm just curious why you retard it back in the winter. Almost all b series engines get away w/ 18BTDC.
