Default ignition start button

i have a stupid question, but just thought i ask cause maybe there is a way to do it. i want to get the ignition start button for my 97 civic. what i was wondering is if there's anyway i can make it like the s2000. what i mean by that is, on the s2000, there is only 3 position (off, i, ii). so on the s2000, you turn the key to ii and press the button to start the car. i was wondering if there's anyway i can do the same thing, turn the key to position ii and press the button. i know i can do it, but what i was trying to know is, can i disable the start so even if i turn the key to start, it would start until i press the button. i know this sounds impossible, but just though i'd ask.

I would have said search, however, I searched and couldn't find the information. However, there is also this other really useful search tool called Google. And as soon as I Googled it, there it was, 1 of the first 5 links.

Well when you hook it up you will have to splice into the "start" wire coming from the ignition switch. So if you cut the "start" wire and dont hook the end of the wire that goes to the ignition switch back up, only the button will be able to start the car.

i only found instruction on how to install and wire the start button, but not how to disable the start position on the key assembly. i want that so i won't be able to start the car with the key.

btw, i have an alarm with engine start, so does it make a difference?

what was the keywords you typed in to search on google?

The "Start" position is only a switch. It engages the starter when the key is turned that far. All you are doing is replacing the key "start" switch with a button "start" switch.

As long as you remove the starter wiring from the key assembly it will not engage the starter. The diagrams for which wires are which are in the Helms manual, I think.

BTW, if you only splice the start button into one side of the ignition wiring you will have 2 switches in series - and you will need to have both of them in the "on" position to engage the starter! This might be a good anti theft idea, but it would be a pain to have the turn the key AND press the start button simultaneously to start your car!

so all i have to do is remove the wire that's connected to the key assembly's start? will i run nto any problems when i use the remote start if i remove that wire? fyi, i have an automatic.

where would be a good place to install ths button on a 97 civic cpe? i was thinking abt placing it to the left of the climate control panel. you know how there's that little piece of triangle plastic on each side of the climate control? btw, am i able to buy that piece so my friend can help me make the hole on it instead of doing it on the original one in my car, in case he mess up on it.
