Default ignition doing weird things at vtec

not quite sure when i noticed it first. a few weeks ago..
basically anytime i try to go into vtec (5200 rpm), the car cuts out.. the tach bounces around and drops to zero, if i let off the throttle, everything goes back to normal and i can drive just fine... if i keep pushing it.. the car does same thing, then dies.. CEL code 15.. i had it happen to me tonight.. i was pushing it to see what would happen (the code 15 popped up for the first time ever)... i was coasting at about 65 mph.. shut off my ignition and restarted the car.. no problem.. put in gear and drove the rest of the way home.. code 15 gone.. till next time i try..
anyone experience anything like this?
car runs perfect till i get to vtec ... then the ignition cuts out????

code 15 :
Ignition Output Signal
missing or defective ignition output signal

how can i have signal up to 5200 rpm and then it cut out??

this is in my 1993 integra RS with b18c1 block and b16a head.
i have an external MSD blaster SS coil (no msd ignition box)
i've checked my wires.. everything seems ok

I had this problem on my Civic. As time progressed, the problem started happening randomly. It turned out to be an ignition problem. First of all, when I pulled the plugs I found that I'd way over-gapped them. Probably because I used a regular feeler gauge to gap them instead of using a plug gapper. I also switched back to stock wires from some Magnecors. I've had nothing but problems with non-stock wires.

That extra gap and any problems with the wires may increase the required voltage potential to someplace beyond the reach of the ignition system. When you're in VTEC, demands on the ignition system will be highest.

Also check your timing belt. Make sure it's tensioned properly. If it's loose the reluctor in the distributor will slop around causing signal scatter.

Ignitor is the easy answer because Honda had a bad run of them some years ago, and the tach feed comes out of it. However, anytime you exceed the system's secondary (sparkplug) voltage the circuit is not completed and the ignitor is part of the circuit = no tach signal.
