Idle Problems And Blue Smoke
Two problems have really been annoying me, firstly idling,
My car will not idle on its own in the cold I have to have my foot slightly on the accelerator until it gets warmed up. We have tried to adjust the idle, but when I increase it, it function in the cold better but when it gets warmed up the idle increases to 1,500revs, which is to high.. Honda have done a few tests on sensors etc… and can't find anything. Any ideas? My current setup is a HKS filter, Skunk2 Racing Inlet, Jun Exhaust Manifold, and custom de-cat exhaust. Do you think I am getting to much air in.
Secondly, blue smoke from the exhaust. You may remember this post from before. I was advised by most people including Honda that it would be the Valve Stem Oil Seals, these how now been changed. But after doing 100miles it still blue smokes setting off from traffic lights and changing gear. Alternatively I believe it could be the rings, but we have done a compression test and all cylinders are equal. Any one have any ideas?
Thanks.

I think its CAI and exhaust my girlfrinds car does the exact samething. And she has intake and exhaust except she does not get blue smoke at idle. we are solving the problem by trashing the honda and going to mazda. she decided she wants to go fast.

um a CAI would allow more air to the engine, which possible would raise the idle, and good job dissin honda on a honda forum hehe,
you might want to check your IAC, unhook it once while its idling and see if your idle drops or stalls, if it doesn't well then its not the IAC

We have tried removing the IAC and it idle high, which shows as you said that it is working. Could it be due to an air leak, as when I had the Skunk2 Inlet fitted the garage used gasket sealer not actual gaskets. So we have replaced most of the sealer with actual Honda gaskets, the only one which needs replacing now is the one which is between the inlet manifold and the block. This is booked in on Saturday to be done.
Thanks

a vacum leak usually will cause a high idle, (along with a map sensor problem) check the tps to see if your voltage is correct might not be opening far enough for air or too much air for the fuel. if you dunno how search hope this helps
We have also changed the map sensor and the problem is still there. IACV is working correctly, as we have also tested this by swapping it. The TPF sensor is reading 0 at idle. No matter what you do to the Idle Control screw it will not idle at cold. Could it be an air lock in the cooling system or is it possible it could be a temp sensor.
Thanks again for your help.
Thanks again for your help.
the tps should be .5v at idle and 4.5v at WOT (sometimes they are a bitch to calibrate) dunno if thats your problem for sure, but it should give you something close to those numbers

Thanks for that, we will check it tomorrow as I am going to Honda. I think to be exact when we checked it, it said -0. something. We will check again properly tomorrow, will let you know.
Sorry forgot to mention my car details may help, it is a 1998 Civic Type R (EK9).
Thanks.

Went to Honda on Saturday they say it’s not the tps as it would show up as an error when then connect the tablet tester (Honda Dynastic computer). They think it’s the oil seals on the pistons. How likely is this? My car has gone through 4litres of oil in 3weeks so it must be something serious. I have also done a compression test and all cylinders are around 225psi, so is there any point in doing a Wet Compression Test?
Getting a bit worried now, just don't want to spend £700 on changing these oil seals and it still be the same.
The problem has gone worse since the valve stems have been changed. Once changed I drove for around 120miles and it was the same as normal blue smoke on change of gear/traffic lights. Woke up one morning and now its blowing loads of blue smoke even on tick over or when you rev. Decided not to drive it anymore till its fully sorted if that will ever happen.
Has anybody had a problems with sticky scraper rings on the pistons, as Honda also stated that this could be a possibily?
Thanks.

my d16z6 had that problem, 1 oil ring was stuck due to carbon and wasn't working correctly. I was only going through like 1.5 quart a month though
Honda are going to do a sticky ring test tomorrow (Wednesday), not sure how exactly.
While Honda have the head off to change the oil rings, is there anything else I should change will it’s off. Any other seals or rings, which could cause the problem?
I spoke to my girlfriend’s dad as he used to do rallying, building engines every week. He said it could also be such thing as the timing and I should have it checked before Honda take apart the block, what do you think does it possible?
Thanks.

Confused! After I have done the valve stem seals, which have been done but didn't resolve the issue. Which should I do next, the valve guides or the oil ring on the piston?
I spoke to a company today and I am not sure if he is trying to rip me off, he says that it could be bore damage, piston damage, detonation damage etc...... and he would have to take the block apart and if it is the above it will cost around £3000/£4000.
The engine sound really quite though and has only done 40,000miles.
Thanks.
