Default idle??

my car is idling at 1500 rpms, isn't that a little high? where should it idle at? i notice that sometimes it lowers to 800 or 900 rpms and then raise back up to 1500 rpms when its idling. where should i be idling at and what could be causing the car to idle like this?

It should be idling at somewhere in the neighborhood of 600-700 rpms, check a Helms manual for exact numbers. Consider the fact that it may be an error other than an improperly adjusted idle.

well i just got it back from the shop (tranny install) and notice that the idle is messing up. something must have happen to it during the tranny install because before the install my car would idle at around 600/700 rpms. somewhere in that range. i guess i could call the shop and let them know what is happening but i have been without my car for several weeks and would rather fix the problem myself instead of taking it again to a shop. if any suggestions on what could be the problem and how to fix it would be appreciated.
