identifying b series transmissions
is there any way to id a b series trans other than stamps or stickers?
reason is i got a 92 jdm b16a swap with a hydro trans
there were mix and match parts so im wondering if my trans is ls or jdm b16
trans was dirty and has no stamps or stickers
i assume its non lsd because i cannot see right the the axle holes (i was told lsd can see right through is this true?)
there is no vin plate and there appears to have never had one (jdm?? or do older usdm ones not have a vin? can someone clarify for me i heard jdm ones didnt have vin plates)
other than what i just stated is there any other ways to id the trans other than tearing it apart and counting gears? (which isnt possible in my situation)
like is there a stamp in the casing somewhere or something?
any info would be GREAT! MAHALO!

Is the car running? If at all possible, take the car out for a drive, and get on the highway. If it's an unmolested transmission, you should notice a fairly high 5th gear cruise rpm. But then again, if its a mix and match of parts, someone may have done a 5th gear swap.
Play with this. It's not 100% accurate to the mph, but it should give you a good starting point. http://www.fatboyraceworks.com/gears/

if you have axels that can be put into the trans, install them. Spin one axel, if the other turns in the same direction, it has an LSD, if it spins in the opposite direction, then its an open diff.
motor is out of car and trans is not attached to engine. i cleaned it off and there are no stickers, no black stamps, and there is a rod in the middle of the axle holes that doesnt allow you to see all the way through to the other side. my buddy's type r trans you could see right through the hole.............
Chances are your buddys trans has an LSD. With no stickers, stamps, etc, you either have to drive with the transmission, or crack the case and count gears.

-my buddy has a jdm itr trans with LSD (you can see through the axle holes to the other side with no obstruction) and its clearly stamped on the block
-my trans has no stamps, stickers, etc......and i cannot see through the axle holes (it is obstructed by a metal rod) so im assuming its a jdm b16 non-lsd trans or a ls transmission
with that said am i **** outta luck as far as identifying it without disassembly? i really would hate to rip the trans apart or install it just to find out its an ls trans. thats why i made this post. i only plan on installing the transmission once so yeah

sorry to hear bud. I can relate on only wanting to install a trans once. Cracking a trans isn't as bad as you would think. Theres a couple posts by bense about transmissions and one covers opening the trans i think. I'm a little drunk, so otherwise i would search it for you, but my only suggestion would be to search "rebuilding B series" and at least try to get comfortable with the guts of your transmission before you crack it open. Anyways, good luck
