Identify the following, win a prize... (Vacuum components)
I am trying desperately to learn more and more about my engine guys. Below are a couple of pics of some items I have been looking at, as I am now on the vacuum cap everything that has an opened end kick. Can you guys please identify the following:
1. What is this?
2. What does it do?
3. Is it useful (Can I bypass it/cap it off?)
4. If the above answer is yes, is there any pros to bypassing/capping it off?

A : Evap canister, Catches fuel vapors,Yes Do not bypass.
B : It has somthing to do with the throttel,Yes. Do not bypass
C : Fuel pressure reg. It senses the vacuum and adjusts the return line flow rate, Yes. Do not bypass
D : Map sensor, it tells you computer how much air it is getting, Yes, Do not bypass
I Think this is all right but see if anyone else resopnds?????

1. Charcoal Canister - Don't need.
2. Air by-pass valve for additional air during start up- Don't need.
3. Fuel pressure regulator. Need.
4a. The one on the left. Map sensor. Need it. Essential sensor for ECU to run fuel/ignition maps.
4b. The one on the right. Eletronically controlled vacuum valve to Charcoal Canister
You should get a Helms manual if you want a map of these parts. Some big libraries will have the factory manuals.

Ok, on the charcoal canister. What do I need to do in order to remove it, and what will be affected?
The top red hose goes in to my firewall. What is in this hose, and can it just be plugged?
The middle black hose goes in to the valve that is in pic 4 above. This then goes from the valve to the fuel pressure regulator. What happens if I plug the end from the valve to the charcoal canister...will that be bad?
The bottom red hose goes in to my TB, can this just be plugged?

By the smell test (an unintended taste test), I have concluded that gas or gas fumes go through the top red hose that goes in to the charcoal canisted...
Should I just leave the nipple coming out of the firewall open, or is it safe to plug it (and not have my car blow up).
Also, what fuel filter does the B16a1 use? Will the 99 Civic Si one work?
jB
I also disconnected the other 2 lines (going in to valve on firewall, and going in to the TB), and so far no adverse effects. Will these smooth running condition continue, or are there going to be problems down the road because of this. Also, I am confused as to the purpose of the valve on the firewall and the fuel pressure regulator. Shouldn't there be some sort of effect on the fuel management since the fuel pressure regulator is connected to that valve also...or what goes through the lines?

Oh..so the fuel filter wasn't changed when the swap was done? I thought it would since it has the VTEC. Okay. I'll grab a 90 CRX Si fuel filter tomorrow.
Thanks,
jB
BTW, 91civic, what do you have done to your B16a to pull the 14.9? I'm still trying to pull 14's on my CRX...I am seriously starting to think that there is something wrong with my engine.

Yeah, I just used a new 91 civic Si fuel filter during my swap. DX and Si have the same part numbers so I bought the one for the 88-91 civic/crx.
Do you know what runs in the red hose coming out of my firewall in the pic above? Is it okay to plug if I take off the charcoal canister?

Correct on all counts.
You can get rid of the EVAP canister and it's associated solenoid but please realize that if you have to ever pass a smog inspection you will need this for the visual engine bay inspection. Yes, they do check.

<--Has no emission inspections
Charcoal canister coming off...
New Fuel Filter going in...
The little thingy in the pic above (Pic #2)...going off
Now, for the charcoal canister...I can also take the solenoid you guys aid...this solenoid is connected to the fuel pressure regulator...so should I keep it on just in case?
