Default I HATE CA SMOG!! HELP!!

Yesterday i went to smog my car and barely failed from high HC 5ppm over limit..

So I replaced my plugs & wires (NGK laser iridiums & accel thunder wires)

go back to test... NO ppm is out the roof MAX 711 MEAS 1578ppm and HC ppm is 20ppm higher

this is both on the 15 MPH test...

it passes the 25mph clean and is tested 300rpm higher

WTF????

Now I am running the JDM ITR ECU.. does it advance the timing more then the usdm?

Your difference is that the CAT was not heated enough before the 2nd. test.

That might be all that is wrong. But your cat is slow to heat up. Notice the 02 readings. Should be 0.0 when it is hot.

He should be able to get you thru with 5ppm's over if he know's what he is doing.

The HC on the 25MPH test is still AT the limit.. anyway to reduce that?

thanks for the information!!

Try some methanol, i used that heat gas antifreeze that has some methanol and i dropped my HC down like 40 ppm at 15 mph

How much Methanol did you use?

How the test is done is the machine sets the limit and then we drive the car. As we drive the car the numbers start to drop. Once the numbers all drop below the limit the machine jumps to the next part of the test.(Fast Pass) is what it's called. This could be why you are at the limit at 25mph.

You are rich, could be the ECU like you said. Could be as simple as a clogged PCV valve also. But could be a number of others like an 02 sensor, weak cat, IAT, etc.

So you need to do some checking. You did set the plug gap correctly right?
Also what gas did you run for the test? and what is your timing at too?

2 bottles of the heat to 5 gallons of gas, a great tip i got from a member here also told me you can get pure methanol from go kart shops and use 10% methanol to 90% gas.

Timing is set dead at 14*, plugs are gapped at .040 Should I reduce the gap for better burn at low rpm?

I know this may sound dumb but is it better to go with fresh oil?

14btdc what is your spec? You want to be 1 degree retarded from spec. So if your spec is 12btdc set it to 11btdc.

040 does seem too much. I would stay at or near spec.

Oil will only make a little difference unless you have a leaking injector.

Run 87 octane for the test it is easier to ignite and it burns cooler.

These should get you by.

stock timing is 16BTDC, stock gap is .044 its a ITR Engine.

I have pure methanol, should I add that in along with the 87 octane?

I have suspected a leaking injector, pulled them once and had fuel in the intake manifold.

Well if you have a leaking injector I would fix that quickly. What will happen is the gas leaks past the valve and then to the piston rings and washes all the oil from them. Not a good thing. This could be your reason why your HC's were high, or at the limit. Also, like I said with the oil thing on last post.

I am not up to date on all motors. Run what octane the manufacture suggests. Since you are running a JDM ecu?????

I am not a fan of putting any more alcohol in the tank. It is suppose to work. I haven't needed to try it yet.

And All Mtr... is 14 your spec ? go with 1 - 2 degrees lower than spec. And see the second line up.

Premium 91+ octane for ITR engines, but as long as my timing is retarded a tad and dont kill it with 87 octane the motor will be fine.

Thanks for the tips, I will be sending my injectors off to RC for cleaning.

had to visit the dmv today for a smog extension

just got back again... 87 octane / .035gap / fresh oil....

almost by a few ppm is identical to my old test

RPM 2071
15MPH CO2 14.5 / O2 0.3 / HC MAX 90 - MEAS 135 / CO .54 MAX - MEAS .43 / NO MAX 711 - MEAS 1596

RPM 2389
25MPH Co2 14.9 / O2 0.0 / HC MAX 56 - MEAS 55 / CO MAX .04 - MEAS .05 / NO MAX 754 - MEAS 66

results from today

HELP?

First off, you need a multimeter and you need to verify the o2 sensor is working properly. Even on the multimeter, may look like it's working... voltage swinging back and forth. But I heard it maybe slow and still cause smog issues. but you should replace the o2 sensor outright. Also make sure the cat is working good.

Spec is 16 BTDC that's why im running 14 BTDC to lower HC at 15MPH. Is that correct?

how do you test your catalytic to see if its working, i hooked my car up to an actron obd2 scanner and it said the catalytic is "ok" and the o2 sensors are "ok"
