Default How to tune a car...

I know what everyone is gonna say, take it to a dyno. But what are things you can do to your car at home to tune it the best. Like if you advance/retard timing, do you add more fuel? Wheres it best to advance/retard timing, dizzy, cam or crank, or does it matter? I have been wondering this kinda thing for a while, and if anyone has anything they can add for tuning purposes, it would be great.

The reason I ask, is because this weekend i plan on putting my Z6 together, and then dropping it in my car, and I am not sure what may need to be done to get it running right. im gonna be running aroud 12:1 to 13:1 compression. ZC pistons, Z6 head, Z6 head gasket.. I am also gonna be running 450 cc DSM injectors, Field VTEC-SAFC, Teg ECU, Skunk2 cam gear, and B&M FPR. I had the head rebuilt, and was milled, not exactly sure how much, but I dont think it was all that much.

With that high of compression, is it better to maybe advance or retard the cam timing by a tooth or two? To get it running better? Add more fuel pressure, and then try to lean the injectors out with the afc?

Any ideas? TIA.

Thank you man, I have been thinking about asking htis for a while, but thouht people would laugh and be like haha this guys a moron, but really not many people know this kinda stuff, and what is this forum for? To learn. I try to help people all the time with swap questions, and mechanical questions, that I can answer. But this is something that can be a very informitive post to a lot of people on this board, and help people maximize performance.

Basically this is a BUMP!

It is a good question but the problem is go to a dyno is the answer...

That's the truth...

HOWEVER... I don't believe in a lot of "truth" about cars especially that you get here... there is the "right way" to do things then there's the way it's been done for years...

Ignition Timing w/o dyno... You CAN hear and feel the difference in power if you pay attention... when it pings you went a little too far...
You want to be VERY VERY carefull messing with timing on a built motor that runs high compression or on boost... while with na it's not as likely... on high comp. cars 1 detonation can BLOW YOUR **** UP.... so be carefull and I'm sure you know to run the highest octane you can find....

Cam Timing... it's too varied a thing to say def. go ahead xdegrees... it's really the same deal.. mess with it till it feels the smoothest and most powerfull...

Fuel... well it all depends on how you're tuning it... whether it's with a computer editing fuel maps or just raising the fuel pressure... it all depends on how rich/lean you're running... the only way to get a good guage of this is with a lambda meter... OR you could just smell the exhaust... there are VERY noticable differences between lean and rich... and right...

My suggestion is to again get a feel for when it has the best power and make sure you're not running too rich...

The only way to accurately tune is to use expensive equipment and mess with stuff a LOT... and I mean VERY weird combo's of timings that don't seem like they'll work well... Sometimes you steadily get more and more power then there's a HUGE drop off... or there's a steady decline and the 1degree change in whatever make a HUGE jump in power...

So w/o these tools you're stuck with your own senses which are and have been enough for TONS of racers/mechanics for YEARS...

with a wideband o2 sensor, so you could accurately adjust your fuel, timming...mmhhh until it pings and back up a little.

set ign. timing to 0. and retard a few degress. reduce the fuel controller about 35-38% throughout the powerband.

I dont have any answers to your quetions, but I have a warning.

I just want you to know you might have some problems with the fields and blue tops. Its hard to get the fuel down since it can only do -30% not -50% like most. I used that setup for awhile then I went to some ford probe GT (310cc) it seem to give me a hell of alot more horsepower. btw this is on a boosted car. So I really needed a good a mount of fuel and the fields would not lower the 450's to the amount I needed. Just a heads up.
