Default How to start a 10 year old engine?!?

Need some help,
my friend just got a car that has been sitting for the last 10 years,
hasn't been started once.

the thing ran fine before it was stored.
and only had like 53k miles on it..

SO i'd like to know , what would we need to do to get this thing started
safely, without damaging the engine at all?

Change all the fluids and a battery are really the primary things.

Your biggest concern would be the oil, if it's sludged it might be a problem. Especially if it's sludged in areas besides the oil pan.

change oil, spark plugs.

make sure you prime the engine with oil prior to starting. cut fuel or spark and crank untill the oil light goes off

If it even runs out lol. It might just be like jelly right now. Just visually compare to it brand new oil. I'd imagine it's pretty thick and will run VERY slowly, my truck did that after sitting for a year.

You'd have to remove the oil pan. I'd imagine most the oil elsewhere in the motor would have drained down eventually...but if it hasnt you couldnt really do much besides take the valve cover off and clean under there.

Otherwise I'd probably run the motor with new oil/filter and let it run for a long time, like 30 minutes, and then change the oil again. I'd imagine that would remove a lot of the old residue.

First, I'd put a teaspoon of oil into the cylinders and turn over by hand to make sure nothing is seized up, then change fluids and plugs (do a tune up..), prime the motor, and you should be good to go.

drain the gas as well i know it sounds stupid but you might want to check the fuel rai and injectors or carb or whatever

Yeah I forgot about that. That gas will be toast, it turns bad after just a few months.

the compresion rings are going to be siezed and it probably will ahve no compresion to start...you are going to have to pour some oil into each cylinder to give it the compresion to start and free the rings.....

pull the plugs and crnak the motor with no plugs so it can spin freely and build oil pressure with fresh oil

yeah good idea,
i'd def do that.

not sure how to disable the fuel injectors on these things though..
VW's are setup REALLY freakin wierd,
the injectors are buried underneath the intake manifold(which happens to swerve across the top of the head for some reason..) and the spark plugs are like.. way down in there.. u need a special tool to get em out...

haha, should be interesting.
