I am thinking about building an automatic turbo powered drag car. I know the stock LS auto wont hold much, but I really want to know exactly how much it will take and possibly where to send it to be fully built to handle boost. Before you trash me for not going with a 5 speed, remember its consistency that wins races. I also think it would be much easier to launch an automatic car, and would probably be less stressful on driveline components. Thanks for your technical input.

 

You might want to give a call to Level 10 out of New Jersey. They do a ton of work for the Automatic Supra guys and they could probably help you the best. Just to warn you though that building an automatic tranny is very costly. It might be easier just to do a 5speed tranny swap. That will hold up the best. I hope that helps.

 

there is a tech article in either turbo or sport compact where they're doing the said thing you are. within the past two months the article came out. sounds like a good idea.

An automatic transmission is the best transmission for drag racing.
It "cushions" the driveline, and the torque converter multiplies the torque the engine delivers.
They can handle alot more power than a manual can as well.

 

Not in all situations. Traction is easier to attain with auto , but remember it is more hp robbing. As for how much power it will take, call level 10 as others have said, they will give you a good answer.

 

when anyone ask tranny questions on this board its always about a manual. i agree with you stance on the auto box but you're asking the wrong people. the supras supposedly had weak auto trannies but i've heard quite a bit about level 10 and the magic they worked with them. there used to be a lady at the drags in ca. who had a yello oddesy that was turboed and fairly quick. sounds lik you'll be blazing the trail for the rest of us copycats to follow

There is no one magic number. It depends how you treat it too.

 

Boost that auto baby!!! I'm doing the same thing, don't give a damn what these 5speed cats think.. LOL, i'd take a 5 speed if i had the option but i'm turboing my ls auto until i totally get the car off my parents hands.. Being co-owner sucks. haha
