Does a cat really rob that much HP?

yeah it robs a few ponies but also you want a little back pressure.....I dont think a straight through test pipe or gutted cat is the way to go. Get a catco or other performance cat. Save the ozone too

On n/a 4 cyl. cars the cat doesn't rob much power at all. These cars are designed to have back pressure.

Back pressure doesn't actually help a car's performance in any way...the less the better. I'm sure a straight pipe would yield more power.

it actually depends. my car was on the dyno with full exhaust, the next pass we took a sawzall and cut it off before the cat and it gained 13hp and 5tq.
I dont know exactly how much of it was the cat vs. the rest of the exhaust(2.5")

look up scavenging. it happens during overlap. backpressure is needed for a street car, period.

The cat has very minor impact on emissions.

I agree. Your better off with a performence cat then just getting rid of it altogether. Back pressure is more torque related but it is still a necessity

Everyone keeps saying how backpressure is necessary. Can someone, anyone, explain to me exactly why?

If no one can provide a proper explanation...well, I must say you're all talking out of your asses....

when i took my decat/test pipe and replaced with cat first thing i noticed was slight loss in throttle response. cat does rob you of power but tiny amount.

way i look at it is you can spend £500 on exhaust and get 5 bhp. spend £50 on a test pipe and get 1 bhp. similar value for money/per bhp
