how many of u work under jackstands
just wondering how many of u do'nt...i do'nt. noth that i dont want to...i just don't have em. is it really that unsafe? i use my honda oem jack btw
I work under them when I do my work at my dads house. To me, I feel safer. If you are wrenching on somerhing really hard, the car could easily fall off the jack.

I would never get under my car with out jackstands or ramps. A jack is just not safe enough, even for changing oil.
You really don't want the car coming down on you.

Roger,
Please... If there is anything I can ever impart onto you it is this... Safety is paramount anytime you're under the vehicle...
PERIOD...
The vehilce weighs in a excess of 2600lbs... That little OEM scissor jack is pretty good in lifting the vehicle... But in terms of stance and secure load baring, it simply does not meet the needs or the criteria of work safe...
Please... Save up some $$$ and buy yourself some good 2-3 ton jack stands, and if the $$$ are there... Buy yourself a nice unltra low profile speed lift... Those two things are not extras, nice to haves, but are the staple of all shade tree mech...

anyone ever watch the Dream Car Garage on the Speedchannel. they have this really nice little hydralic lift and best of all. Its financed! ummmmmm. debt
Great Decision!!!!!!!!!!!! Getting and using safety equipment.
That will significantly help you reach old age, where other things catch up with you.
BTW I use a 10 Ton rated hydraulic jack and always block with jack stands or solid pine 4" x 8" x 14" blocks. In my 35 years working on everything I own (# for perspective risk) I have blown 1 hydraulic jack lifting a backhoe, and pulled one car down on myself installing an engine alone. A VW Beetle back in 1973.
The jackstand saved me when it caught the jugs and pushrod tubes. A bit of engine damage, but I was able to fix it unhurt.
It is never the planned event that gets you usually, it is typically the unexpected that cannot be controlled in time that bites you.

High school was great, we had a Hydraulic lift we could use during shop class to do whatever work we wanted. After I graduated I broke down and bought a floor jack and jackstands.
I never go under my car unless it's on jackstands.

I use jack stands sometimes. My dad owns an auto shop and he gets hella pissed when he catches me not using jackstands. I think it is safe to work on a car without a jackstand, but I would never ever get under my car using the stock jack, that thing is very unsafe.
Uh, yeah, use jackstands. At least get some $15 ones if nothing else. Your life is worth at least fifteen bucks, right?

I always use 2 jack stands plus the jack. Sometime I even put my wheels under there too. I've heard some bad stories from some locals last year.

I have a huge floor jack and like 6 jack stands in my collection, mainly because I like overkill. However, when I'm just changing oil I use those heavy duty plastic ramps you can get at places like wal mart. They support something like 3000# each, so I trust them, and it takes 30 seconds to get on/off of them. They cost me like $30. I also have a set of metal wheel chalks that I use, but anything will work in their place (wood, bricks, whatever).
I have also seen people who have had cars fall on them (yes, several times) and it's not pretty. No medical bill will ever be cheaper than a set of jack stands.
