I was told by my machinist that block guards tend to distort the bores. He recommends installing the block guard and then having the motor bored to ensure true bores.

Be sure to take a look at this thread. Perhaps IM the author, the guy wants his blockguard out because of overheating, a know problem with certain blockguards.

Yeah, I want out.
For daily driving, it's not a problem.
For a few passes at the dragstrip, it's not a problem.
For autocross, it shouldn't be a problem.
For road-racing/canyon running, it's a problem.
And because my car is mostly for the latter, I want out!

a blockguard could cause more problems than its worth. they CAN work but blockguards arent the greatest, if you need a blockguard my suggestion would be to have the block resleeved instead.

Block guards are a waste of money. Resleeve your block if you are worried about them.
Block guards are not a waste of money and sleeving costs $1000, and that, for mild all motor... is a waste of money.
The reason people have problems with block guard is typically, bad installation.
You can file a blockguard and drop it in.. but the work should be done precisely... blockguards are not just buy and drop in, they must be custom filed to fit. The proper installation of a block guard actaully requires you file to fit, weld it in, then re-bore the cylinders to eliminate the distortion caused by the welding.
Just dropping in a block guard can actually crack your sleeves under elevated temps/conditions. Which is why you see some people with cracked sleeves. If the block guards sits too snug, it will actually distort the top of the stock sleeve and in absolute worst case senarios, seize the piston on the upstroke.
Mild all motor ? Don't bother using the B/G unless you plan on juice... and if so, try getting it welded in..

i have only seen one type of blockguard that looks good. the comptech one, it's a lot of money and they will only sell it to you if they install it. but it was done nicely. i have seen 10+ blockguards after we take the head of a motor all differnt, all crap. some of them don't even make contact with all areas of the wall evenly. most of them are mis installed.
it does matter what your planning on doing with the motor. i would be more apt to re-sleeve if you find you actually need a blockguard, or just pay the $ and get it done right.
