Default how does one remove valves?

i got my head a couple nights ago and i took it apart today, the injectors and rail came out easy, IM and TB all related parts came off pretty easy, the roller arms arent even attached so those came off, but i dont see how to get the retainers out to get to the springs to get the valves out...do i need a special tool?
also when i get all my new parts in and put the head back together how do i make sure its all "in time"?

thanx for the help guys

You need a spring compressor. Compress the spring, and it should be easy to take the keepers and retainers out. I speak from experience on a Mitsubishi engine....

to make sure its in time, put the bottom end at top dead center (TDC) (put the 1 & 4 pistons up top, and there is a notch on the crank pulley)carefully sliding a long screwdriver or rod down the spark plug hole and cranking the engine with a wrench helps too. then make sure the head is at TDC (there are arrows on the cam gears, they should point up) then slip on the timing belt. MAKE SURE everything is tight, most importantly the timing belt tensioner, and it should be ready to go. just remember to prime the fuel system several times before you try to crank it.

would having aftermarket pistons (endyn rollerwave) and rods (eagle) effect any timing placements? i saw the arrows that point up on the stock cam gears but how do i make sure theyre perfect or can i just eye ball it? im pretty sure i can make sure the block is in time cuz i did change the timing belt on my Porsche and i used the notch on the crank pulley that youre talking about

im more concerned about the valves and cams being in place more so than the block
