Default How does the ECU detect a problem with the injectors?

I think I have an injector stuck open. I can hear the car missing at idle and it seems like its bogging or something when at WOT. I'm also getting awful gas mileage. Throwing fuel injector code as well. A friend told me that the ECU can't actually detect fuel flow, only the resistance of the circuit. How would I figure out which injector it is? Input?

The ECU can detect fuel flow just not the exact amount for individual cylinders, the ECU uses the O2 sensors as a way of telling how much fuel & air is being introduced. If the ECU is told that the AFR is too high or too low by the O2 sensors it will adjust the injectors duty cycle to increase or decrease the injector open time (amount of fuel)

The easy way to check to see if your injectors are screwed is to start your car and let it idle. Take a long screwdriver and place the metal tip on the injector body, placing your ear to the handle end take a listen. You should hear a loud ticking each time the injector pulses. Do this to each injector. If you hear a siginificant difference in one of them then you know that one is FUBAR'd. An engine stethoscope would work even better if you just so happen to have one laying around....If you want to do a more in depth injector test buy yourself a shop manual for your car.

If your injectors check out test the following;
1. MAP sensor,
2. TDC, CKP and CYP sensors
3. EGR system.

the injectors seem to be very loud, louder than they were when I had my LS motor. I originally thought it was a valve, but I found that the injectors have been ticking very loudly. I can hear them through the firewall and over the sounds of the road. I will test them with a screw driver when I have a spare moment. Thanks GhostAccord!.

update-today i decided to try to check some of the seals, after my diy stethoscope was a bust. the bottom of the runners on the intake were wet with gas and two of the o-rings around the injectors look to be damaged, thus leaking fuel and dropping fuel pressure causing my misfire problem. i think. lol does this seem plausible? im not an engine builder or anything so i dont know if a couple leaky injectors would be the cause of everything, or just another piece to the puzzle.

Yes that would be a good reason for your problems. I would say to replace all of them not just the ones that are leaking. The seals are cheap at the dealership. Approx $40 to replace the O-Rings and 2 seals on all four injectors.

i just bought a kit at bumper to bumper for about 9 dollars, but it won't be in til monday. ill update once i replace the parts. im also heading to jegs when i get home from school to pick up a fuel pressure gauge to install by my filter, which come to think of, should be replaced. maybe ill finally see some high end power.

$9 for all 12 seals is extremely cheap, unless it's just the 4 injector to IM seals. Most aftermarket parts stores sell them as an injector seal repair kit. That kit usually contains the O-Ring, fuel rail and Intake manifold seals for one injector.

a good way too see what the injector is doing is using an oscilloscope.

i asked him if it was for all four injectors and he said yes, but if hes wrong ill just head to honda and pick up the rest of the seals/o-rings i need.

You should also clear the ECU of codes and stored long term and short fuel trim values, and allow the ECU to refind those values. Those values may have been incorrectly set because of your lean condition.

well no worry there, bc for some reason my ecu resets everytime i restart my car. i think its bc of the code 20-electrical load detector or something of that caliber. thanks.

it resets itself because the backup fuse is MIA or popped. (check the underhood fuse box for a 7.5 amp fuse)

i just replaced the o rings with some new ones from honda and the engine seems to be running better across the board. compared to before, it seems to pull harder in the upper rpm's and it idles better as well. i noticed that 3 of my 4 injectors are missing the little filter that sits in the end of the injector. is this a big deal?

if not, then all i need now is a tune.
