For OBD0 you just simply look at the LED on the ECU and count the blanks.

For OBD1 and 2 you need to grab a paper clip and bend it into a U shape. You then get the service connector under the dash (green rubber cover over it) and place the jumper paperclip into the harness with two wires in it.

You put the ignition on the ON position and count the CEL.

One long blink = 10
One short link = 1

So example, two long blinks and one short blink is 21.

HTH.

What if he has a model that doesn't have a service check connector?

i've been lurking here for a while, and i'm a member of http://www.g2ic.com
anyways, i don't know to much about the EK Civics. my friend has a 98 DX and he just told me the check engine light came on. i understand from reading this post of how to check the ecu(is it under the pass. seat?) and if someone could point me to a list of what the codes mean? my helms manual for the DA is in my trunk and my dad has my car in wyoming.
TIA.

Only other model that doesn't have one is non-OBD 88-91 or OBD0. They have an LED on the ECU.

What about 1998 and newer Accords? Or 1999 and newer Oddyseys?
