How do I know if the distributor is sparking on exhaust instead of compression?
(fixhondas)
This is from an IM from fixhondas. I'm worried I may have mounted the rotor wrong because I've already burned up one cap and coil...but I don't know how to check if it's on the right way? Any help is greatly appreciated

The shaft in your distributor is round, with the screw removed the rotor can turn freely on the shaft. The hole for the screw sometimes is drilled all the way through the shaft. When the hole is all the way through the shaft you can remove the screw, rotate the rotor on the shaft 180 degrees and reinstall the screw- then you will be sparking on exhaust instead of compression. This is just to let you know it is possible.

The only way you could reverse the ignition timing is if you removed the pin from the intake cam interface side and flipped the keyway around. This is probably what the fixhondas guy was referring to...just using mixed terminology.
The rotor side of the distributor is fixed...the rotor only goes on one way.

Put #1 cylinder at TDC, and check the cam gear to see if the top mark points up, then the rotor should be pointing at the #1 plug on the distributor cap.

I should point out that the title should read:
How do I know if the distributor ROTOR is sparking on exhaust instead of compression.
Also, what's TDC?

With the distributor rotor facing the #1 cylinder position (bottom left corner), the side of the keyway with the asymmetrical index mark should be facing the back side of the distributor (back of the engine/car).
Visual reference is from the passenger-side fender looking at the distributor mounted on the engine.
I'll take a quick pic.
