I use Acetone/Lacquer Thinner and a SS brush. It doesnt scar the aluminum heads. Just go light with the brush. It will take the carbon buildup right off with a little work. I would suggest taking the valvetrain/valves out to do this.

I'm not sure, but could seafoam be used? Instead of pouring it in like the directions say, could you just scrub with it?

if you can, take it to a shop that will tank it for you. The only problem with it is you have to take apart the head first, but it will almost brand new.

Dismantle it and take it to a machine shop and get it bead blasted.. It will look brand new when you get it back..

Take it to a machine shop and have it tanked. It's only about 20 bucks. You actually don't have to take it apart first if you don't want to. It will fry the seals but if you are rebuilding it anyway. A friend of mine does it all the time on heads he is going to sell to cut down on down time before he refurbishes them.
