Default How to determine the direction of rotation in an engine?

Basically, how could I determine which way the engine spins without being able to find any information on it on the interweb?

edit: or does every engine spin the same way, and it's just the trans that's different?

It would depend on which side of the car you are on....

If it is a stick put it in 1st gear and push forward.
If and auto I would say just bump the starter and mark the pulley.

If you're able to see the path that the timing belt takes, here's a way to find out. Typically, the timing belt/chain goes straight down from the camshaft gear to the crankshaft gear on either the left side or right side. If it travels down the left side, the engine rotates counterclockwise. If it travels down the right side, the engine rotates clockwise. Here's generic pics to show you what I mean:

The SAE standard for auto engines rotation is counterclockwise viewed from the FLYWHEEL end. This is the end to which the power is applied to drive the vehicle. 90% of engines on the street rotate counterclockwise except hondas. Most Honda engines rotate CLOCKWISE (counterclockwise if viewed from the front of the engine, cylinder 1- where the accessory belts are used).

without starting the engine all transverse FWD engine turns the same direction as the wheels. honda only opted to mount the tranny [b, d and h] on the right side [ when ur sitted inside]. this to make room for the brakes and other items for their home market when exports was not that big.
