Default How to clean valves?

how do you go about cleaning the valves and the surrounding area w/out removing them?

Wire wheel on a drill.But you really should disassemble it and do it right.And don't hot tank it all assembled.It will ruin the seals and leave solvent in the guides.

Oops. Ultrasonic cleaning is only for disassembled heads. Sorry...skimmed the OP, and missed the part about keeping it assembled.

wire wheel is probably the easiest and safest way with the head assembled. Although you should do it proeprly and have it disassembled and check your seats and guides at the same time.

If you took it apart is there a solvent to soak individual parts in to loosen the gunk?

The best way to do it if you have the head apart is to take it to a shop for ultrasonic cleaning. That will not only get the carbon off, but it'll help clean out the water passages and the oil drainbacks.
