Simple Green. Nylon Brush. Pressure Washer.

Although the shop should tank it as a matter of course.

have the machine shop hot tank it. My machinist wouldn't even hone it before he hot-tanked it... something about not getting all the crap from my block in his machine. It's a pretyt standard practice to have a block hot-tanked.

Hot tanking aluminum blocks is not good...have them cold tank it.

True, or pressure wash it (the special machine, not the one that you can buy)

Let the cleaner soak for an hour at least, will be much easier for you then.

Whatever method to clean it, hot tanking works well... I normally spray most of my blocks but glass beading or even sand blasting work awesome... The problem with paint is that it's very hard to clean as you can NOT use brake cleaner, etc... Glassbeading gets my vote tho Good Luck

i use Never Dull... it works pretty good. when cleaning my engine i usually use Simple Green and a few brushes, but that did nothing for the carbon build-up around the header.

on the left you can see the part i cleaned, and on the right is what it looked like before i used the Never Dull. (ignore the duct tape, that's temporary until i can find a Del Sol VTEC a/c bracket)

i think if you try this stuff, you'll be able to get it pretty clean. it will take some time, but if you have the patience i think you'll be happy with the way it will turn out.
