how to clean head without hot tanking it?

I picked up a sohc head and it's black like tar inside but there's no sludge on any of the parts and under the valve cover it's spotless so I don't think thats original cover for it. Anyways how can I clean the head without having to disassemble it and hot tanking it? Would just Seafoam work when I get the engine together and running or is there something else? Maybe just spray it down with brake or carb cleaner? I can I hot tank it completely assembled? Sorry I just never had anything hot tanked before so I don't know what is all involved with it and what has to be done to the parts before hand.

They actually dont hottank it.. Its called jet washing.. All you need to do it remove the cam, rockers, valves, springs and everything else that is attached to the head.. Take it to them dirty as **** and it will look brand new when you get it back..
As for the rockers and all the other stuff, I always soak them in a gallon can of carburator cleaner for a day to two and they look brand new when you wash them off..

won't do much.
Best way to really clean is either hot tank or parts washer.
Otherwise, you're gonna spend a LOT of time, and possible damage parts by trying to hand clean it.
Gas is for cleaning parts
Alcohol is for drinking
Methanol is for racing

I usually disassemble the entire head, soak it in concentrated degreaser overnight (sometimes twice) and then use brake cleaner and a small brush to get the little **** out before drying it with compressed air.

Depends is it breaks down rubber or not, Your valve seals are rubber and will melt with strong chemicals..
It would take you like 10 minutes to pull that head apart.. Just yank the rocker assembly off as a whole and remove the cam, then just remove the sensors and vtec noid and your done.. Get the head jet coated and while thats getting done you can spray the **** out of the rocker assembly with degreeser and clean it up however you want.. Putting it back together is just as easy..
I would also get the machine shop to resurface the head to true everything up so youll get a better seal on the head..
Are you scared to take it all apart or dont have the time or what?
