How to clean a head??
Sup peeps....I have a d16z6 head and it has alot of deposit on it.....what's the best way to clean the whole head...should i take it apart first?? also my boy has a jet spray steamer....would it be safe to steam it to get all the oil and deposits off of it??? all info would help...thanx!
Carefully disassemble the head and you can either:
Wash it yourself.. hit is with some brake cleaner, then with gasoline and a NON-NYLON scrubbing brush (do not use a toothbrush)
or
Take the disassembled head to a shop that has a parts washer and give 'em what? $5 to wash it.
or
Find a shop with a sandblaster and have 'em clean it... don't know how much, but shouldn't be expensive

Don't sandblast it. Disasemble the head, and take it to the machine shop and have em throw it in their big parts cleaner. It's worth the effort.
Unless you plan to have to totally rebuild afterwards including decking it, regrinding the valve seats, and fixing up the valve spring seats go, then no! Sand blasting eats away at the metal. Not good. Plus it's aluminium which makes it even worse. You could plastic bead it, but I'd recommend baking it in a parts cleaner/oven. The place here has like a dishwasher. It uses solvent and gets super hot... does awesome work.
