How to clean carbon build up? Please help
I did a compression check yesterday and my compression is much higher than it should be. How can I clean the carbon out of my engine?
thanks

How much higher? My own compression is 220# on all four at 10:1 compression on a stock engine. Higher compression will cause higher compression numbers but if you know there is lots of carbon I would suggest a fuel additive. Most people strive for High compression numbers.
put some heavy duty fuel cleaner into the tank or have the car's fuel system cleaned at a shop.
an occasional romp into the upper RPMs does not hurt either.....

It is a 91 CRX si and the compression is suppose to be around 185 but mine are 210????? It is a stock motor with no internal work to my knowledge.

Ok I'm gonna let you guys in on a little secret. You go down to the GM dealership and ask the guy at the parts counter for some TOP ENGINE CLEANER not "top end cleaner" start your car up and pour some directly into the throttle body til the car dies. Then start it back up. Be warned this **** is like a smoke bomb so don't do it in your garage or even on a residential street. do this maybe 2 or 3 times. I'm serious about this! The guy at the smog shop told me this after I failed the CA smog test. I still didn't pass but the #'s dropped dramatically. It flushes out the carbon build up in your motor.
alright I will try that. So I just take off my intake and pour the stuff in where the the intake hooke up at? That is the throttle body right?

Gumout also makes a similar product that you can buy at pep boys for $2.99. Same process as the Gm one. And like CamoHatch said, make sure to do this outdoors and not in your garage. If your car have lots of carbon build up it will smoke up your garage like spy hunter

So just because your compression numbers are high you assume you have carbon build up?

water works fine just like other people were saying. just use a spray bottle like a windex bottle and spray water in the intake as it runs. using so little I dont think it is possible to hydrolock.
well I am swapping out the a6 for a b16 so I guess I won't even worry about it now. Thanks For the help.
MachAf.......what else could cause really high compression in as far as I know stock motor?

i used AFT, rev rpm to about 3k, take off holes from fpr, and let it sick about a small amount of AFT every 10 second, do that about 3 to 4 time, this will clean your piston, a alot of white smoke will come out like what other have said, everyone have there own ideals

my 180k HF was hitting 230ish
buildup at its best~!</TD></TR></TABLE>
more buildup = more possibility for detonation
Carbon on your internals is not a good thing, excessive carbon can decrease your performance and cause pinging.
ATF, water injection, and other solvent type remedies work, but there is usually a reason why motors build up carbon. Most likely failing rings, poor gas quality, etc..

First off, a compression check is not a great method to determine the actual compression (psi) in your combustion chambers. You use a compression tester to ensure that the compression in each piston is equal relative to each other. There are massive discrepancies between various testers even those of the same brand.
Do the test again. Same numbers? Try another tester. Same numbers?
Might as well try your "cleaning" methods, as it won't damage your car (I'm worried about a few of them).

my mechanic told me to burn up and out the carbon on my crotch rocket to "take that bitch out and bounce it off the frickin red line, you *****." Is this remotely accurate? I've noticed from watching friends rebuild motors that the harder the driver, the less carbon deposits.

Thats retarted, the carbon gets hot and glows. I guess Detonation is also cool. STFU!!!!
I remove the spark plugs and spray carbon cleaner down them, then start up the car and spray the rest of the can in the TB. Then let that **** sit in there and run the car. spray some more in the car. then you are good to go. You need to change the oil afterwords. it gets really nasty.

Honda Dealers sell an item called "Throttle Plate and Induction Cleaner". This is an item MEANT for cleaning out carbon in the throttle plate/fuel system. It's used the same way as you can use the Top Engine Cleaner.
The Throttle Plate cleaner, a toothbrush, and tools to remove the throttle body are all that's needed. Spray and scrub the throttle plate on both sides and get as much carbon off as you can. Then with TB off intake, spray and scrub as much as you can. Then, in a well ventilated area, run your vehicle until the smoke clears.
Or... You can follow the directions on the can.
