how can i tell!!!!!
There are usually markings, either on a bar code tag or printed on the tranny itself, that will tell you what family the tranny belongs to. Other than that, to determine what specific tranny and the actual gearing, you'd need to measure the gear ratios. There's a nice FAQ on how to do so here:

if it has a VIN just decode it. if it does not, and the tranny is on the car and operating, there is an easier way.
