im notto swift about electrical stuff and using a multimeter. first- how do i hook up the multimeter? ie.. where do the black and red wires connect into on the multimeter, what setting do i put it to on the multimeter. I tryed to adjust the tps while the car was on but, i could not get the idle to come down from 3k, no matter which way i turned the tps. any help appreciated.

turn engine off. key in on position. black multimeter lead goes to a chassis ground. red goes to middle wire on tps sensor.

you need to "back probe" the tps plug while it is still connected to the tps sensor. you need to basically just shove the tip of the lead into the back of the plug until you get a reading.

set the multimeter to "V" the one with the dash and dotted lines not the squigly and place the selector on 20.

with the throttle closed, multimeter should read 0.5, wide open it should read 4.5 volts. get as close to these numbers as possible.

heres a pic of a mm to show you..except set it to 20, not 200.

You can also try sticking a small paperclip or safety pin into the middle wire, it's a bit easier than shoving the lead into the plug

how exactly do you adjust the tps after you have the multimeter hooked up?

If it has the two screws in it you just loosen them and rotate the tps one way or the other to get the correct voltages.
