Is it allright to use the stone-type cylinder hones like you find at Autozone, Advance Auto and other autostores? Anyone ever used one of these? That is the only kind of cylinder hone I can find...

 

Honda recommends a 400 grit stone that gives you a 60 degree angle cross-hatching pattern.

 

Yeah, i've got a Helms...that hone does have 400grit stones on it, but it doesn't leave a cross-hatch pattern, I'm asking if anyone has had success with this type, because this is the only cylinder hone I can find.

 

yes it should work my dad is ase and i have used his a couple times

 

Not sure but I wouldn't use this type of hone as it takes off too much material. I would look for one that has dingleberries on the ends and is used only to break the glaze off of the cylinder. Takes a honing machine to put down that perfect pattern.

 

I second the bottle brush style hone (dingleberries) only if you must do a DIY cylinder hone. Just be careful not to over do it.

I would still rather take it to a machine shop though

 

don't overtighten the loading spring, use 400 grid stones or finer, use SLOW rpm with handheld drill. See, I practiced on old D-block before got to hone B18C1 block. Use motor oil or ATF fluid as honing fluid. I did it the first time & it came out very clean.

I just went and did it with 400grit stones, using some ATF as lubricant...didn't overdo it as to take too much off, just enough to make it look good.

Turned out great

 

Do you have an inside mic, snap guage and a dial bore indicator to be sure you didn't take too much off?

 

It was checked with a dial bore gauge before the honing a while ago and it was well within the factory service limit, and I didn't hone it much just enough to get them looking nice, and I used 400grit stones. The block I'm using only has 28k on it...

I'm going to try to see if I can find someone's dial bore gauge to borrow..but I'm def. gonna check the piston ring end gap to make sure it is within the factory service limits: 0.60mm (0.024") according to my Helms for the top compression ring.
