Upcoming Honda Engines
Print Email
January 27, 2005 -- From recently obtained inside information given exclusively to Honda-Acura.Net by an email tipster, we have verified the engines that will be featured in the 2006 Honda Civic, 2007 Honda Fit and possibly the 2007 Acura TSX, plus other engines that have unknown destinations. Our source reports that Honda is in the final stages of development for three new engines destined for the US, including a 2.0L 4 cylinder and a 2.4L 4 banger. One of these engines will probably be slotted into the Civic Si, respectively. What’s more, Honda is bringing to market its first US application of a turbocharger in the form of a 2.4L Turbo. This engine will presumably be fitted into the Acura TSX, or perhaps even a high output Civic slotted above the Si. Also, our source has confirmed that Honda is developing a new 1.3L hybrid engine, a 1.5L and a 1.8L. The 1.5L, originally scheduled for launch in MY2006, has been delayed until MY2007 but it will be built in the US.
Undoubtedly the biggest surprise of this batch is that Honda has chosen to introduce a turbocharged engine in the US. While our source could not confirm whether or not it would be a DOHC i-VTEC, he hinted that it would not be affixed to the current K24 engine that Honda uses in the TSX, Accord and Element. No horsepower figures are available, but expect the Civic Si’s powerplant to produce around 200 horses while the turbo should make about 250. The new 1.3L Hybrid engine will probably see duty in either a Fit Hybrid or the next iteration of the Honda Insight. The Fit, Honda’s wildly popular car in Europe and Japan, will probably start at around $12,000 when it reaches US shores.

seems.....unnatural.
Ive always viewed Honda as an NA company. But this is good news anyway you slice it. I wonder if they are going to be i-VTEC equipped, since lowering the CR would be required for the turbo and diminish the gains seen with VTEC.

very interesting, I wonder what engine they plan on boosting, hopefully honda can design a solid deck block such as mazda has done in the miata, dodge has done in the srt-4 and many other car companies have done. Honda needs something new but what makes me even more curious is to what or whom will be providing the turbo kit? Greddy, HKS, Garrett? Keep us informed on what else comes up, very interesting indeed.
Honda has been making turbo engines for there watercraft for awhile....it is going to be interesting to see them start puting that technology into some cars.....

Yeah, Honda has a 3 person watercraft that has a 165 HP 1.2L turbo 4 cyl, GPS, and the ability to tow a huge boat if needed be lol.

interesting indeed, their NA platforms are amazing, cant wait to see how they pull off a turbo motor

Oh boy, this is oging to be interesting. I wonder if the "DIE-HARD" Honda people will like this? A lot of people think of a traditional Honda as a high reving N/A powered car. Anywho, I think I would like it if the power gains were substantial enough.
I work at honda plant in Ohio, they have R&d department and test track here also. There was a rumor that they are working on a turbo v6 6 speed Accord. Now thats would rock some ***!

Do you fill up the turn signal fluid in new cars?

yes I do and I am honored to have that job
, no build the Honda trx450r quads, they build the Honda civics, accords, and the Acura tsx, tl and I believe the rl next door at the auto plant.

If this rumor proves to be true, Honda owners will soon find that a FACTORY turbo Honda isn't 'sweet' or 'tite' as it sounds. Honda has produced high-revving, N/A engines for over 15 years. Besides from Integra LS owners, most B and K series owners are used to engines that scream above 5,000 RPM. Where was I going with this... oh yes.
I guarantee if Honda develops a mass-produced, factory turbo engine the redline is going to be well under 7 grand with a small snail. This will be like driving a factory DSM which, in my opinion, isn't too fun. I'm not trying to burst bubbles... just my two cents.
However... I do not know who Honda is trying to compete with. Afterall, the Civic Si has been slow as **** since debut in the late 80s. I can't imagine Honda trying to compete with an EVO, STi, etc as they will lose their current target market due a price increase.

VERY VERY WRONG.
Honda has never had a turbo automobile in america.

maybe im just a dumbass and read a ton of wrong info...which is probably likley. i never really looked into the rsx type s but i heard from somewhere that it was turbo. oh well.

they might have to lower the static cr but the dynamic cr would undoubtedly be higher and therefore vtec would yield a higher gain. vtec and turbo go hand in hand.

Turbo vehicles do not like alot of overlap, VTEC is all about overlap.</TD></TR></TABLE>
True. Im a little worried, but also optimistic.
Do you think the cam overlap be so bad at higher engine speeds, though? Or perhaps they will tune the engine with a wider LSA but retain the massive profiles. Who knows. Either way,it's an OEM turbo K series that can swap nearly any civic or integra. Schweet.
EDIT- just remembered its going to be a turbo 2.4L, probably dictating a longer stroke, lower redline and less capacity to overcome cam-overlap with increased RPM. Most likely it will have the Si version of i-VTEC. Dang.
