Honda Antifreeze
How important is it to use Honda brand antifreeze instead of another brand? I looked in the manual and it says to only use the Honda brand, but is this just Honda wanting more money or is there a real reason? Thanks
You have to use anti-freeze that is phosphate and silicate free otherwise you'll wear out the shaft seal on the water pump. That's why Honda recommends their ****.

i take the new pre-mixed honda antifreeze and add about 1L or water to it.
works really well......the temp guage doesnt go up much more than 1/4 of the way.

You guys that like Dex-Cool at least need to be aware of my old thread on the subject: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=194103
If you get into problems, don't say no one warned you!
I have finished a complete top end rebuild on one of my 1997 VORTEC V-8's because DexCool attacked the silicon in the intake manifold gasket and started to delaminate my head gasket.
I started to break down my second 1997 Vortec This evening. DexCool skewered me .... Big Time
Your experiences hopefully will be different. I hope honda used a different silicone elastomer. BTW the metals were pristine, it just attacked the seals in my engines.
FleetCharge is a low silicate, no phosphate, nitrite stabilized "conventional" antifreeze. Its $6.99 a gallon here and is red/purple in color. It's intended for Class 8 diesel trucks. (Semi's) I believe it is the best chemistry on the market.

Dexcool is supposedly silicate free. It is red, using a nitrite type of aluminum corrosion inhibitor. I overheated one day and had to put in some green type shell antifreeze and will probably switch back to Honda type.
The Honda stuff
is only 10 bucks. The new stuff we have is good for 60000 miles. Part # is OL999-9001. It's all premixed also.
Good Luck!!

dealer. they want $15 (+ tax) for it. that's really what this thread is about - should i spend $5 or $15 on antifreeze. but i guess i'll grin and bear it and fork out the $15. Thanks
In reply to Gruvy Tune,
Dexcool is silicate and phosphate free. It is organic acid stabilized. Nitrites are ONLY in the heavy duty version (I forgot what DexCool called it), mandated by Catepillar Diesel because of documented cylinder liner cavitation corrosion damage with the original Dexcool. Cummins then demanded that a Silicate additive package be added to DexCool if used in their engines. Silicates have not been added to the base or heavy duty DexCool version yet to the best of my knowledge.
The original did not contain nitrites. Its all in the links in my posts above. Particularly in the Pencool links.
NEVER ever mix DexCool with any other formulation. It causes precipitate dropout and sludging also documented in the links in the posts above.
I guess you guys can guess I got burnt bad by DexCool.

The Honda Type II Antifreeze should NOT, I repeat NOT be mixed. It is pre-mixed for a reason. If you DO want to run the Type II coolant, then be sure to completely flush out your system of all the old coolant and all water.
Honda made it pre-mixed for a reason. If you want to mix stuff, stick with the old coolant part number, CU08730. $16.00 per gallon, suggested retail.

And the local Honda dealer wants $15 for the type II (pre mixed) antifreeze. one more reason Honda dealers SUCK

Ok bud calm down. Not all dealers mark up there Listed prices!! Just a few. The New Pre-mixed stuff is around 10 bucks list. You have too remember each dealer can set there prices Higher or lower then suggested retail price!!
A little tip to some of you that hate the dealers with high prices. If a dealer is far away from the Parts depot most likely there prices will be Higher!! Some dealers can send there own drivers too the parts depot. Witch in turns does not cost them freight on the parts!! Witch makes there prices cheaper. Why do you think Man Honda in Ct has cheap prices. The Parts depot is close by!! All in all though, dealers, any dealer, Ford, Chevy, Toyota Etc, can make what ever price they want. Higher or lower!!
