Default HIDs? how they work

hey, I did a search but I can't really find a whole lot. Also I'm sorry if this isnt the right place for this thread...

Anyways, i have a 97 teg with a 01 itr front end conversion, with the 4300k HIDs. I do ALOT of night driving and really would like to have the brightest lights possible. So I was considering scraping my 4300k stock lights for a 8000k kit. BUT now come to find out that the higher the kelvin rating isnt the brighter the lights.

So I was just wondering if anyone could explain the basics of an High intensity discharge system to me. Why is it that a 8000k kit costs more then say a 6000k kit, but the 6000k kit would be brighter? please help

thanks very much

It's an electric discharge inside the lamps, kinda/sorta like fluorescent lamps. There's no hot, glowing filament like normal light bulbs.

4300 kelvins or 6000 kelvins refers to the color, not the brightness. Look for brightness specs like lumens, candlepower, or something like that.

Instead of a normal carbon filament that current flows through and lights up, a HID (aka XENON light) has an electric arc that replaces the filament. It then excites the gases inside the blub thereby producing a brighter hotter light. This is why you need the eletric ballast for HID's (xenon) lights.
