Default Help! Stuttering and intermittent power with b16a DA

Just bought a 1990 da with a b16a in it. When u sit still it revs up fast and normal. Under load while driving it has like no power and the power seems to cut in and out. Sounds like a broken down Subaru the exhaust like rolling sound like bad misfire. Also, vtec sometimes doesn't engage. U have to advance the timing all the way on the dizzy to make vtec engage. Very weird to me, can anyone help. Ecu is p28

yea ahh... first off y r u advancing the timing?? r you trying to rebuild ur motor or something??? set ur timing and don't ****in touch it!

second off you have ignition issues, pull the cap on ur dizzy and check for any corrosion on both the cap and rotor. if so replace.

3rd, check all your connections from the dizzy to the plugs, (tight and corrosion free)

4th, pull your plugs, check gap, if gap is more then .044in or 1.1mm or they look dark replace with NGK PFR7G or NGK BKR7E's.

once you check/do ALL that, report back with your findings

And vtec not engaging either. Sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't. Either way runs like crap. And previous owner took out the thermostat too. Why idk. Anything to do with vtec not engaging, cause it runs cold not up to normal operating temp on gauge

That's exactly ur problem. Put a thermometer in that asap. Motor has to be a certain temp for vtec to engaged.

Has nothing to do with your ignition problem

Ok yea gotcha. I thought it had to be at a certain temp for vtec to work. He told me after he took the stat out it still worked. But apparently not. I did notice driving he stop and go for 20 min it started to engage. And this morn driving to work it was a little chilly and it wouldn't go in. But yes, still have that nasty misfire. Throughout entire rpm range. Even at idle. I'll put a thermostat in it ASAP and see if that helps with vtec engaging.

I do not have a thermostat in my car and vtec works fine even when its cold and the engine is not at operating temp.
Oil pressure would prevent vtec from engaging. you can maybe drop your oil pan and check the pick up strainer to see if its clogged or get an oil pressure gauge.
low oil pressure can also cause the other issues that you are having but not as likely as ignition so check that 1st..

Yea I plan to. But the vehicle has ran correctly with this ecu in it. Not breaking up like this. All ignition components have been replaced, and fuel filter has been changed as well. The igniter was changed too. Only think I can think of is that the car has no o2 sensor plugged into the harness. So I'm sure in limp mode but shouldn't run like this. It's really bad, oh and it has a golden eagle fuel rail on it too. Maybe it's too rich between limp mode and bigger rail? If so maybe I can turn down the fuel pressure have a blox pressure reg on it now. Says pressure is 60psi at idle.

Have quadroople checked firing order. It's not that. Pulled injectors, filters were clogged. Cleaned put back in runs worse. Gotta redo entire ground connection sometimes start right up then will be dead. Wiggle connectors on post start right up but runs like poop. Ill update later
