Default Help, running way too rich

umm, yeah my civic 91si, D16A6 is running way too rich, i have greish/black smoke at idle and more of it when i rev up, i put in new plugs and wires and that didnt do the trick i'm not burning much oil, and i dont think i'm burning coolant, altho i havent checked yet, my engine temp seems fine and isnt climbing of anything, could it be cuz of my cold air intake and the car is getting way too much cold air? what about the intake air temp sensor? i ripped off my resonator and **** for my CAI could i of ripped that off by mistake? so many possible problems, is there an adjustment for how much gas your car eats up? what can i do, with todays gas prices i want to get this problem fixed....also if my valves are ticking, would that be one of the problems? i also have a brand new o2 sensor...please help, thanks

there are many of variables. what's your engine setup, idle, and condition of your engine? have you recently done an induction service and if you need a valve clearance there's a possiblity you may be consuming more fuel than normal.

intakes normally contribute to engines running richer than normal because of the more air taken in by the engine. that could be why it's running richer but if it's extremely rich, check your fuel pressure regulator and all of your vacuum lines, especially going into your intake manifold. it may need to be replaced and do the regularly scheduled maintenance on your car to eliminate possibilities. hook the iat sensor back up too.

The MAP sensor will see that more air is moving through the intake. Telling the ECU that it needs to increase the injector pulse width. Sooo, having to much air/fuel is not a problem per say. Like mentioned above, sounds like the fuel pressure regulator, is letting to much pressure build in the system. Also, have you checked the ECU itself for any codes...?

Hey, I feel your pain. My car runs pretty rich too (not quite as rich as yours from the sound of things). At idle, if you stand behind the car (or sit in a car behind me) you can smell fuel... almost as if you're at a gas station. At night, if I run it up through VTEC headlights behind me get pretty dim in the black smoke. I've checked everything, and I've decided it's the aftermarket ECU that I'm running. I need to buy a FPR and back the pressure off a bit. Good luck.
