Default HELP problems with tach..........

Do i have to run the pos and neg to the battery or can i use the back of the cluster pos and neg.. Autometer tech said that the cluster might not be putting out 12 volts that is why the tach works only when it wants to. its not reading the correct rpm. could something be broken internally? when i flick the tach with my finger it jumps around too. HELP
bY THE WAY ITS A 98 CIVIC

I put an Autometer phantom tach in my 98 civic dx and wired everthing right up inside the dash and it works fine for me. No problems at all and it doesnt jump around even if I hit it pretty hard. Are you shure none of the wires are loose good ground ect..? I had to hook up to a blue wire for the tach signal but theres like a ton of blue wires inside the dash it took a while to find the right one. If you used those crimp on wire taps sometimes they dont get very good contact. Heres a link to a page with pics on installing a tach in a civic hope it helps. http://home.mpinet.net/t-hero/Tach!!.htm

yeah....we wired everything behind the cluster! power, tach lead, ground, etc. and we used those crimp on things!! maybe that's why it isn't working!! thanks!!

try runnin the power to the fuse box as well as the 12+ light turn on lead. Then if you add more gauges all you have to do is solder em in.
