Default HELP! Im a gross polluter!

I did a search and came up with nothing. Time for a smogcheck here in california.

I got the guy to see if i would even pass so i havent been officially tested. Heres the deal. NO is WAY over MAX. at 15mph its MAX:1059 MEAS:3539 and since GP is 2014 Im way too high. smiliar numbers for the 25mph test. I also failed HC which is MAX: 121 MEAS:152 at 15mph. Again similar numbers at 25mph. CO test passed very low.

I have a gen 1 jdm b16a in my 90 integra which had a b18a previously and has to meet b18a emissions limits. Mods are CTR cams, CAI intake, VAFC set to 0. I can do almost anything visual wise and the VAFC is hidden. What do i need to do to pass? I can swap the intake and cams back to stock but those numbers are so high I dont know what to do!! Is there anything I can do with the VAFC? Could my cat be bad? What about O2 sensors?PLEASE HELP!! IM RUNNING OUT OF TIME!!

will leaning it out at low revs help?

do you have an adjustable FPR?

waht is your timing set at?

here is a FANTASTIC link from an australian perspective (we have similar smog laws to Cali)

it is pretty big and unorganised site - but it will help alot i think! (helpe me pass my emmissions )

That is a very helpful link. It seems to point to lean fuel mixture and cam shafts as part of the problem but i bet my cat is bad after 12 years.

Dont bother removing the cams. Id get a new cat, like a Carsound or Random Technologies. Also, try lowering the fuel pressure some, might help lean it out bit.

Ok, I'll get a new cat cuz i wanted a carsound anyway. The a/f was already running lean and i think that could cause the high NOx readings. So the cams shouldnt make a difference? I wouldnt think so. Looks like the motor was running too hot internally? Wouldnt lowering fuel pressure below stock make the motor run hotter increasing NOx levels? I need to lower NOx.

"grey imports" or low volume imports my friend...

here is the low down on why we get GTR's that dont necessarily meet our Australia Design Rules ("ADR's") regarding emissions...

Compliance Plate Approval may be obtained under "low volume" procedures where a manufacturer offers for sale in Australia fewer than a total of one hundred (100) or twenty five (25) vehicles per year depending on the vehicle category, provided the models are eligible for "low volume" certification.

Under "low volume" procedures, alternative and substantially easier means of demonstrating compliance with many of the ADRs is acceptable and the rigorous testing of the "full volume" procedures is not always required. For these specified ADRs, evidence that shows compliance with a reasonably equivalent overseas standard may be acceptable.

Applicants for Compliance Plate Approval under "low volume" procedures need to note that one of the requirements for obtaining approval is that a satisfactory written description of the quality assurance arrangements is provided in accordance with Circular 0-2-9 (see below). The extent of the documentation required will depend on the applicant's scale of operations.
so yeah, i hope that answers your question, maybe it is time to lobby your senators for this sort of scheme.

it is also why we get the EVO IV Lancers too!!!

to cool it down retard your timing a bit?

keep it simple, it should pass with some tuning...maybe remove the AFC altogether and let the Honda ECU control everything???

check your PCV valve operates properly too!!!

pcv is good. the afc is disconnected. o2 sensors are good. So I shouldnt go spending a fortune replacing parts? Im 3x over max on the NOx's. Could that have all because of lean mixture? Will replacing my cat fix that? if the O2 sensors were bad could that be the cause of extremely high NOx?

OK, lean mixture = high NOx

lean mixture is also gentle on your cat & O2 sensors - so these prolly aint too much of an issue (but can be...)

remeber the graph - one gas goes up others go down - your others were lower so bringing NOx down will bring the others up to create a balance...

i really hope it is just the tuning for you, back hte timing off some and do another 'informal smog'

good luck!

BTW, a good smog guy can tell you what areas to look at to correct certain problems. Replace your caty. and have him re sniff it. Ask him where he thinks the problem is.

that smog guy told me a couple things to look at but he didnt know much because I was at a test only center where they dont do repairs.

I ordered a carsound cat at http://www.testpipe.com Thats rated for a V8. The guy said this would help it flow better and run cleaner. Im also replacing my O2 sensors, removing the A/F computer that was making it run lean, replacing the stock air box, and fast idle valve but leaving the cams in for now. Im also going to run some guarenteed to pass thru the system because ive had several people recommend it.

With a JDM motor, you will not pass visual. I'd recommend just finding a place that will smog it for you for a slight 'extra' fee...

Yeah a test only station is the way to go. They are much easier people to deal with than hard core smog guys that want to sell u other services. I agree with everything you have done, so let us know what happens. The last poster is right, sometimes you got to find a motivated tester thru friends and pay the price.

I havent gone back yet. I just got my carsound cat on yesterday. I noticed my exhaust is leaking at little at the 3 bolt flange after the cat. Anybody know if that is bad? Theres no way to put a gasket in there so i dont know how to seal it.

Other than that I have done the following:
-removed VAFC
-tested FPR
-rectified the O2 sensor problem and got them working perfectly
-car sound car (that leaks a little)
-stock air box replaced
-checked all vacuum lines and charcoal canister
-put timing back to normal
-going to get some fuel additive made for passing smog

In fixing the O2 sensors I took of the exhaust manifold and found there was no exhaust gasket there. It was leaking badly and also leaking at the b pipe. So both those leaks are fixed and i think the only leak left is after the cat but its not leaking much. This car sound cat gave me a lot more low end power tho i did not expect any change.

Im going back this week! Wish me luck! If this fails I guess I could swap my cams back but i dont see why i would fail.

Did you pass smog the second time? How much in penalty fees do you have to pay for being labled a gross polluter? Do you have to smog your car every year now that you are a gross polluter? What is the cost of repairs?

I think it is best not to mod your car too much in CA. The smog guys there are ***** and they will make you pay. CA. is anti heavily moddified cars and anti gun.

I have not smogged it again yet

The first test wasnt reported so it says on the results sheet im a gross polluter but the dmv doesnt know.

I dont know

I repaired it myself with a new cat, O2 sensors, charcoal canister, fixed exhaust leaks, vacuum leaks, rolled timing back to +0 and replaced the stock air box. Even ran some "gaurenteed to pass" thru the fuel.

Im going back probably tomorrow. I'll let everyone know as soon as i test it. Thanks for all your help everyone!! After all the work Ive done, if it doenst pass, I might drive it off a cliff!

I PASSED! Here are my results so you can compare:

As you can see I did much better but I think it was still running a bit lean. At least I dont have to deal with this for another 2 years!

Hey Josh.. this is Rich, Brad's brother... Im past due for my smog test (test only) by a few days. Where did you go get your test at? Seeing how you passed with the cams, i guess i wouldnt have to worry about removing mine. Im positive my car will pass visual, its the actual "sniff" test im worried about. I took out what i could including: intake and ECU. I also added some of that same fuel additive. Im kinda worried about the head work i have done. i.e. port n' polish, slight milling.. any suggestions?
