Default help hydrolocked!

we just put a new CAI on my brothers ex and he has somehow hydrolocked his car and i dont know what to do next. what actually happens when the car hydrolocks? do the pistons sieze or is a rod broken? the engine will not even turn over. any input is greatly appreciated!

He will think better about driving through a river next time. Did you pull the plugs and try to turn it over? If the cylinders are full then it won't turn over. You need to get all that water out quick. You will also need to change your plugs and oil. After you pull the plugs, if you still can't get the engine to turn over. Then there is probably serious damage inside the motor. Make sure the starter is working and nothing else is stuck or siezed. You may be able to peak down the spark plug holes and see if a rod is potentially bent. You'll know by the position of the pistons if you know what to look for. Good luck

just tried turning the engine over with the plugs removed. it sounded like the starter was actually engaging this time, but it still wouldnt budge. i removed the valve cover and there is the dreaded yellowish muck from the water mixing with the oil. i cant see through the plug holes. what is my next step and what is the worst that could be wrong?

I think the technical term for the state of your brother's engine is FU-BAR! See if you can turn the engine over by hand with a socket on the crank pulley bolt. If you can't, then his engine is now a metallic turd. Sorry for the bad news. He will need to pull it out and tear it down to see if anything is salvageable.

What happens when you hydro lock is you fill your cylinder with water, when the piston comes up to compress the air fuel mixture, there's water instead, which can't compress.

This will usually bend the con rod.

Drain the oil and pull the plugs. Refill with oil and remove the fuel injection relay (near the fuses inside the car) and then crank the motor like you normally would using the key. Listen for any nasty metal on metal contact. Next do a compression test, this will tell you where it stands. If it checks out then put new plugs in and fire up the motor. It took mine about 10 tries before it started but it eventually did. Damn was I happy. Let the motor run for about 20 mins and then drain the oil again and refill with fresh oil just to help any existing water get out.

How fast was the motor revving when it sucked up water?

The reason I ask is because my 97 GSR sucked up water through a CAI and was revving 8k everyday about a week later. The motor was at about 750 rpm (idle) when it took a drink. I hope the motor ***** on the douche bag that bought it. Thieves

im not sure how much it was being revved when it took in the water, my brother was driving the car. he hasnt been driving lang and isnt very mechanically inclined. he said it started running bad after he hit a puddle and a few minutes later he hit another puddle and it died.

i drained the oil, pulled the head and found all four cylinders full of water. #2 and #3 looked like they were in the right place, but #1 and #4 looked too low, also #1 was about 1/2 an inch lower than #4. is that correct? i assume that some of the rods are bent

also, i think our best bet would be to replace the rods and pistons. will LS rods/pistons fit the d16y8 block? my friend has an extra set that i could get for cheap. or does anyone have any suggestions? thanks again

Check the head for warpage and cracks (possible), check the block for any cracked sleeves or stripped head bolt threads, and check the crank for any bearing damage. Definitely replace all pistons and rods, and no the LS ones don't fit.

the rods should fit from my understanding.......you will need to install different bushings on the piston end of hte rod but from what I have seen, they fit

well i havent noticed any holes in the block at least. i have removed several heads but have never done lower end work. will i need any special tools? does the block need to be emoved to change pistons/rods? what other rods and pistons are compatable with the y8 block?(since its already apart i might as well upgrade right?)

if its a single overhead, save your money on buying parts, go to like hmotorsonline and buy a jdm single overhead vtec (vti) longblock for 495 dollars i think.

i was hoping that i could get by with changing the rods and pistons, but of course i was wrong. this engine is fucked. two bent rods, two completely broken, a shattered main bearing cap, and several holes in the block. now im not sure what to do. i think the crank and the head are ok, but im thinking of replacing the whole block. finances wont allow a b series swap, but since its all apart, would there be some alternatives to just getting another y8 block? thanks again
