Default HELP! guys with poor mans type R...

hey guys,

im currently building a Poor mans type R, heres some specs:

JDM B18c block,
JDM B16a head,
standard crank,
eagle rods,
CTR Pistons and Rings,
standard head gasket,
Rev Valves,
CBR 4 throttles
Microtech engine management
no head milling.

the info im after is piston to valve clearance. Im looking at buying the cams for this engine and am very impressed with the specs of the Buddy Club IV cams as i want something with over 300 degrees duration. but before i commit any cash to them i want to know if im going to run into and problems running cams with 12.3mm lift on the intake and 11.8 on the exhaust.

anyone here running a similar engine with similar cam lift specs?? i dont wana buy them, get them shipping across the pacific only to clay the engine and find out im guna have a smashed piston in 10 seconds flat.

any info given will be greatly appreciated.

cheers all.

The only way to know for sure is to clay the puppies. You can try claying it with the stock cams, or even with some CTR/ITR cams if any of your buddies is willing to lend them to you for an hour or so. That will let you know how close you are to bumping the valves and piston together. Done correctly, the CTR cams will clear, and give you an idea of how much more room you have to work with. Then you can determine if the BC spec 4's will work out for you.

thanks zeqs, not a bad idea.

99b16si - im a Heavy diesel mechanic so i have access to a number of Lathe's. my pistons have had a groove cut into the side of each boss 2.35mm inside to fit a 1.1mm internal Circlip. id put a photo up, but its too hard to see.

how many people have used ctr pistons in this situation? most people go for the Itr's it seems

because i used to work for a division of Honda down here. my pistons cost a quarter of what something like JE's would cost, and thats with rings and pins.

Most people go with the ITR pistons over the CTR pistons due to the compression. While it is possible to tune the car with CTR pistons to run safely off of 91 octane, it's difficult, requires a lot of tuning knowledge and patience. Most people aren't willing to invest in either.

down here we have 98 octane pump gas.... which is what it will be run off every day.

has nobody built this kind of engine without the use of even slightly wild cams?

I recommend doing a search for people running Toda C's or JUN 3's or 4's since those are in the range of the 12.3mm lift. You'll need to do the claying in any case to find out how much cam timing range you can use safely. You will have other issues to look into such as valve spring coil bind or valves touching if you run too much overlap.
