Sounds like you pulled the battery cable, then the engine died. That normally means your alternator isn't working. So was it a new alternator or a new battery. If it's a new battery, I guess you just proved that the problem was your alternator all along...

BTW, that's kind of a dangerous way to check it. Back in the day, before cars had computers, it was OK. But pulling the battery cables makes voltage spikes that SOMETIMES can fry your ECU.
