Default HELP

Hey my 1998 civic hatch dx started steaming out of the coolant reservoir today to the point where it was squealing like a kettle so I turned the car off even though my temp gauge said it was still regular temperature, I'm almost positive I have to replace my thermostat but the mechanic I brought it to says I may need a head gasket, but after it steamed I let it cool down for 45 minutes and then put water in my coolant reservoir and drove it to the shop and had no problems at all normally associated with a blown head gasket, the car started on the first turn over, there was no loss in power, no weird noises just over heating but I don't want to get fucked and pay for a head gasket that I don't need but I'm not sure if I need one or not, any input would help greatly, thanks!
