Default Heli-coil on block?

One of the headstud holes on the block (cant think of another way to describe it) has been stripped out. Is it ok to use a helicoil on the aluminum block? this is also for a boosted car w/ a b16

I've seen a few cars at the local domestic shop do this, so i think it would be ok....i'm just not sure

I have done it before, you can special order longer than standard inserts which do a better job than the standard length ones.

the helicoil will be stronger than the original threds, so i don't see why someone shuld waste money on inserts.

Timeserts all the way!!! I wouldn't bother w/ Helicoils even if you plan on running head studs. I've Timeserted two blocks and it's simple and allows you to remove and reinstall and torque the headbolts down time and time again! They are a steel insert that locks down in there and wont strip out! I've used and seen both in blocks and had to redo helicoils w/ timeserts!

If the block is totally stripped and everything, your best bet would be to have the hole welded up and then retapped.

crap, I used to have the kit in my garage but a friend borrowed it and I have yet to get it back. Okay, found it!

11mmx 1.5 kit = #1115
but those are short in serts and only 5 of them. you want the longer inserts.
11mmx 1.5 x 30mm= #11155
Kinda cool thing, my friend called to order some and got redirected to another number for the main u.s. distribution center. They then began asking for his address and started laughing when he gave them an address that was like 5 miles from their location. He ended up going down and picking up the kit from a hot foreign girl! got a deal too. was like $60 for everything!

dont' forget that you gotta grind down the top of the inserts, they are intended to be flush mounted repairs thats why they come w/ the counterbore bit. a little grining to the top to bevel the edge allows them to thread down into the block till they bottom! if you don't do this the wont go in!

You also have to get creative on the tap tool because the tap that is included sits flush with the deck surface when threaded in to the bottom of the holes. so like the guy mentions in this post(which unfortunately doesn't have pics anymore) a small socket can be tapered down as well and give you the extra 1/8" or so of depth needed to turn the tap down in there. let me know if you have anymore questions! good luck

i haven't read anyone elses responses.... but this is mine...

One of our customers (retard) overheated his gsr, and kept driving it. Started it up the next day, overheated it again, and kept driving. Well,m needless to say, he overheated the car 4 times all in all.. thinking it wasn't a big deal.

Short story: we got 6 helicoils done to his GSR block (machine shop), and it's been holding.

go figure

I just read that ARP makes oversized studs, so i can just retap rather than use the inserts. I think thats what i'm going to go with
