head missing cam caps, any options?
OK, I recently picked up a type-r head. it has the valves and springs and all, but no cam caps. I know that the caps are made specificly for each head. Is there a chance I can pick some up and the would work? Can I get some and have them re-ground to match the head? They may have to ad metal to it, right? would that mess up the integrity of the parts?
You should have them checked at a machine shop and possibly have them align bored/honed to be completely true. Then plastiguage them and make sure the clearances are OK.
I have mismatched cam caps on my head, but after checking the clearances with plastiguage and slightly loosening them up with some 800-1000 grit emery cloth,I got them perfectly within spec. I did not however get them checked for straightness. I pre-assembled everything and checked for binding before I eventually felt safe...
The engine has been running fine for almost a year and has gotten me in the 13's all motor untuned on street tires...
Good luck. Its definitately possible though probably not recommended
