Default Head Gasket

I got my clutch installed today and the mechanic says theres a water leak in my engine. He says its because of the head gasket. I looked up there and there was dried antifreeze on the block so i believe him. He quoted me 850 for the new gasket installed.

MY question is could I do this myself? the most ive ever done was install an intake, change oil, and do an exhaust. How long should it take? Is it just unbolting the head and changine the gasket or is there more to it?

Thanks...

You could probably do it yourself. Do you have any friends that are pretty good with cars? That's the best way to do it, have somebody help you that has some experience, along with a Helm's manual.

Allow 1 day for the first time. You will need a torque wrench and the usual sockets. Anyone know af any other tools?

You will have to remove the exhaust and intake manifolds. Remove the valve cover. Then remove the head and replace gasket. Reverse process and be sure to torque the head right.

It really isn't taht bad. What motor is this?

Set the motor at TDC first, take the valve cover off and rotate the crank counter clockwise (you'll need a 19mm socket and possibly a breaker bar) until both the arrows are pointed UP.. assuming its a DOHC.. anyway just let us know, we can walk you through it step by step

if all you've done is intake etc it will be advanced for you. but it is a pretty easy job once you do it

edit: 850 seems really high, you should be able to get it done with parts (50 bucks) for around 500.. and you dont' need to remove the intake manifodl just unplug sensors and fuel injectors you're good

That is very Important. Also when putting the head back together, start from the middle bolts and work your way outward bolting it down like X style.

I have basic sockets and a torque wrench. By the way the engine is a d16z6.
