Default head conversion

Hey i have a dx i was wondering to increase power should i get a vtec head. Also how much hp would that increase and how hard would it be to install. The second thing is would i need a new ecu for that? The last thing is does anyone know how the venom 400 module works and if its even worth the money? thanks

hey, you can put a Vtec head onto your DX block, its called a Mini-me swap. I would recomend the D16z6 head, with the Y8 manifold and gasket. This should give you the best set up. You will also need more wiring for the Vtec, Or some sort of Vtec controller to get the Vtec to work. I would reccomend getting the EX/Si harness and P28 ECU (92-95 EX/Si). that way, it should just hook up with no needed wiring or vtec controller. The HP gain ive herd has gone from stock, 102, to somewhere around 120, or even close to 130. Its a great cheap mod to give you some good boost of HP. might try doing a serch also. You can also use LS rods, and D16a6 pistons to give u better internals on your DX block. just some ways to improve your DX bud. good luck!

u could also use an rpm activated switch to engage vtec, but your fuel and ignition maps will be a lil off. one of my friends ran a mini'me with an rpm switch for 2 years with no probs at all. best way would be to get an an ecu cheapast way would be a rpm switch.

Isnt the 92-95 ecu a obd1 so would i need an obd2-obd1 conversion harness cuz if so those are quite expensive. Also how hard would it be to install this and how long would it take and does anyone know where i can purchase all of this stuff thanks

yea you would need a skunk2 odb2 to odb1 harness converter if you wanted to use the P28 ECU, but, you do not have to, you can use other ECUs like off a acura. I dont know how reliable the different ECUs would be but i know you can swap them. Umm the harness costs 265.95 retail. i have a business lisence and might could get it for cheaper than that. But id hgave to sign up with the company and it might require a buy in, so you are looking at 265.95 retail. The head swap ive herd it realitively easy to do. Especually if done by a Honda technition. could be done in one by yourself if you knew what you were doing. You can pick up a D16z6 head intake manifold, all sensors, vtec solnoid,(sp) all for around 200 in good condition used, try doing a serch. Ive seen a few on here for sale. Bye the way, how old are you guys?

Why would you want to ge the Z6 over the y8 head? The y8 flows much better and w/ a y8 ECU, you won't need the OBD-1 to 2 converstion harness, you won't even need the y8 harness. All you have to do is wire the ICV valve and VTEC solinoid. thats it. Everything else is plug and play. Get the Y8 head and ECU, don't mess w/ z6 and OBD-1.

hmmm he seems better at this than me. I herd the Z6 has advantage over the other for some reason. But what do i know? im only 16 right?

well, i don't see how the z6 can have any performance advantage over the y8, the only advantage would be the price and a valve cover that says "VTEC" on it

But hey, you seem pretty smart for a 16 year old, but what i said is the best and cheapest way to run it correctly, trying to mess w/ RPM switches and fuel maps via an AFC is a pain and it will never be as good as the ECU.

that is very true. See i was going to do the same swap myself on my 94 DX, so i looked into it. and you are absolutely right when it comes to the Vtec, wiring and switches crap. ive herd its a PAIN in the *** to adjust it and get the stuff to even work, and to work good and properly? oh boy... another reacurring problem has been tuning and timing. when dealing with the internal swaps like stated above. but yea, im just soaking up everything i can here on honda-tech. doing all installs and tuning on my car is a BIG plus when it comes to exp too. cant beat hands on! i might make some Honda Technitian Dept proud someday btw, sorry for the sarcasticness before...

well, if you have a OBD1 civic, which you do, then the z6 might be better off for you. But the Y8 could work as long as you use the the z6 intake manifold.

But on a OBDII, i think the y8 is the best overall chioce.

the y8 head gives u more compression and flows better than the z6. if u are on a tight budget u can get an rpm activated switch to activate the vtec solenoid. also u can use a y8 intake manifold on an obd1 car.

Yes you can use an RPM activated switch but it is not good at all for the motor. Fuel maps change when VTEC kicks in, w/ an RPM activated switch, you are not useing anything to change the fuel map, thus creating an enviroment not to good for your motor.

And yes, you can use an y8 manifold, that has been stated.

as stated in my first reply i noted what u said about the fuel maps and ignition timing and commented that getting the proper ecu would be the best way to do it.
