Default having trouble timing ls/vtec

i tried to time my ls/vtec today, but it wont time right. it has a b16 head on it, vtec water pump and gsr timing belt and stock cam gears. the car runs great, but i just wanted to make sure the timing was correct. when i put the timing light on it, i cant get the middle notch on the crank pully to line up with the timing line on the belt cover no matter how much i move the distributor. but the one line that is next to the three lines on the crank pully lines up perfectly at 16*. and my car idles at around 975 according to the timing gun, could this be the problem?? any ideas??

how high is it idling when you're trying to time it?

when i put on my new disty, i had to retime it obviously, but it was idling too high for the crank pully to move enough toward the arrow (sounds stupid), so i removed the intake pipe from the tb and partially covered the opening, and that made the pulley move forward. i don't know, give that a try?

first you should set your idle, car on disconnect the iacv, set idle at about 450-550; shut car off and connect iacv back.
Bypass the connector and check timming again

what i am getting from all of that is that your car DOES time right at 16 degrees BTDC.

but... you also want to set it at 0 degrees BTDC (at TDC)?

if the TDC mark on the pulley consistently lines up with the timing mark on the t-belt cover, then your engine is physically timed correctly.

just because you said "vtec water pump" with gsr timing belt.
those two parts have to match... so if you're using a B16 water pump with a GSR timing belt, wouldn't that cause problems?

its a b16 water pump and i was told the gears on all vtec water pumps are the same, and the gsr belt is the only one that would fit, b16 or ls belt wont fit.

nevermins everyone, i figured it all out. it was neevr clear to me that the three marks close together were for timing guns that are non adjustable, im using an adjustable snap-on timing gun. so, the lone white mark (btdc?) is the only mark i should be concerned about, and adjust the gun so that at 16* or whatever i choose that same white mark should be lined up. thanks everyone
